I recently participated in Ironman CDA and had a bike accident on the second loop at mile 78.4 (according to my bike computer) which is near the golf course in Hayden. I was knocked unconcious and awoke in the ambulance on the way top the ER and I have not been able to remember what happened. The accident did not involve another bike or automobile. I know that. If anyone was there as a participant or spectator and witnessed this accident or know someone who did see what happened please send me an e-mail at dmburg@verizon.net.
I did see a guy very bloody on my second loop, not sure the mileage, but it was where the road is going down hill, takes a sharp right turn and then heads quickly uphill. About a mile past the golf course. I didn’t see the crash, but it must have happened seconds ahead of me. If that was you, my guess was that you took the turn too close to the inside and/or too fast and probably hit some loose dirt/rocks.
If that was you, I hope you are ok now. Lots of blood, looked pretty bad.

That sounds like the hairpin right turn from Lakeview to Rimrock, just before turning left onto English Point Rd. It’s the sharpest turn on the course and you’re going fast downhill when you hit it. I agree with triasImight – that’s about where your computer puts you and if you hit that turn too wide or short there’d be trouble. They did have volunteers at that corner slowing people down, so if you crashed there emergency services would have been on the scene quickly.
Sorry to hear about your crash. I hope you recover soon.
OK, don’t forget we love to see pictures of road rash and trashed bikes! (as long as you are really not seriously hurt that is). Best of luck with the recovery and hope to see you out hammering another triathlon soon.
Thanks everyone. I just got the EMS pick-up report and they picked me up at the corner of Rimrock and Lakeview and that makes sense since a few of you saw a rider down at that corner and that is also about 78 miles into the race. I must have tried to cut the corner too fast and hit a pebble or some loose dirt. I did sustain 4 broken ribs and a few facial fractures that should heal without any problem (there is a good reason they want your helmet securely fastened to your head). My pride is a little hurt as this is my first DNF since I started doing triathlons in 2000 but at least the Kuota Kalibur sustained only a scratch on the top tube and will be looking forward to the next race. Thanks again.
Glad to hear you are doing well and have a positive attitude! When I heard about Mike Reilly’s accident that is exaclty where I pictured it. I wonder if that’s where his was too…
