Anyone know why the did not use the cannon (Maranatha) to start Ironman Canada this year?
At the welcome dinner Steve King said that sadly they would not be using the cannon but did not say why.
Thanks,
Paul

I was wondering that myself. Also there was no helicopter. It just didn’t seem the same.
Yeah, I thought he said that we would find out more about that on the morning of the race, but I didn’t hear anything either.
Was the cannon owned by WTC, NA Sports, or somebody different? If there’s only one of them, maybe that weekend it was at Louisville instead of Canada?
Canadians would never surrender their cannons to the Americans!

No cannon, no helicopter, and no fireworks all point to one thing – increased fire risk. Helicopters are essential to the fire fights this time of year, and as everyone who did the race knows, there were fires burning during the race that needed fighting. I’m guessing that with the increased fire risk (we’ve had almost no rain since May) that Maranatha wasn’t allowed (maybe some hot ash gets picked up by the wind) and same deal with the fireworks. We’re on extreme fire hazard up here, so that is my best guess from the combination of those three things.
