Ironman Canada 2011 - did anyone see me get hit by a car?

Somewhere between Oliver and Osoyoos, I was sideswiped by a Lincoln SUV. I hit the pavement hard. If anyone saw this, I’d like to hear what they saw and what they think happened?

Sorry to hear. I hope you are doing OK and there are no major injuries!

Ouch. Not meaning to clog the thread. Wasn’t there, didn’t see it, but really hope nothing serious and that you heal and recover quickly. Sorry that the race was “interupted”

Hey, I was talking with you coming back to the hotel from the finishers tent. PM Jaymz on here, I am sure that he saw something. Glad you are ok and were able to finish. Hard enough day with nothing major going wrong.

Good luck at IMLP next year!

Brent

Thanks Brent. We keep the whole family involved too!

Cheers!
Paul

Wow, that sucks. Sorry your race ended up like that.

Not to hijack your thread, but overall, I was SHOCKED at the amount of traffic on the backside of the course on the 7 bitches. It was a solid line of cars for at least 5-10 miles and with cyclist flying (and I’m a 125# chick who hit 40 mph) down the hills on those bumpy roads, it was a recipe for disaster. I’ve done IMC 4X (starting in 1997) and was astounded.

What really pissed me off is that the vast majority of people in the cars were spectators. Don’t they know that they are getting in our way and compromising the safety of the athletes for a 10 second peep at their athlete??? I wanted to scream at them to get the fuck off the road.

I don’t mind the folks on Richter and Yellow Lake, pulled off to the side, but the specatators have no real reason to be out there.

Hey bud, it’s James (was talking to you up McClean and after the accident. I was on a Plasma Premium)

I think I know what happened but it is a bit sketchy, I think she was overtaking some cyclists in a bunch, she was in the left hand (or straddine the two) and then moved right from what I remember, into you. My brain only really woke up when you hit the floor.

I do however have the registration plate if that helps. I was one of the two cyclists who chased after her and banged on the vehicle to tell her to stop. She did pull over but not sure if you spoke to her.

Man, kudos to you if you were able to finish, that’s toughness personified!

Not to add insult to injury, but can OP be charged with leaving the scene?

Though I don’t know if BC’s Highway Traffic Act has a “unless you’re an Ironman” clause or not.

He’s really Jens Voigt and was on a recovery day at IMC. The accident was planned.

Nope, because the vehicle left the scene. She seemed to drive off down the road but got held up by some other bikes. We chased after her and she eventually pulled over (on the right) although to be fair I think she couldn’t pull over quicky or on the left due to the number of bikes. By the time the OP would have been back up on his bike the vehicle and us were way off in the distance and I doubt he would have know the stopped car was her and she would not have know which bike was him.

I think either of them being ‘done’ for failing to stop could be seen as a little unfair to be honest. She seemed pretty horrified when we were banging on her car and to be honest I am not sure she was trying to get away just nowhere to pull over on the left.

Jaymz - you get my unofficial “hero” award. Bravo.

To Salvo, I’m so sorry that happened. The beauty of the big one-loop bike course also can be a problem because they could never fully close it. I’m just thankful you are ok (relatively).

Stay safe out there people!!

Damn.

Johnny. On. The. Spot. Nice work.

Damn bro, that’s brutal - glad to hear you’re ok (or at least haven’t reported any significant injuries).

Jaymz - rock on, brotha! That’s the kind of shit I LOVE to see!

Don’t need the registration plate. I just want to know what we can do to limit these incidents. I hear someone got seriously hurt in a collision with a vehicle. Increase driver awareness? More signage on roads? 3 foot rule? Less “pack” riding?

Less pack riding? With 3000 starters, good luck.

Hey, I was about 50 yards back from you when you went down. All I saw was you and the bike bounce off the road. I didn’t see the contact. I yelled at you to see if you were OK and you said yes. Me and another rider sprinted up to beside the SUV (a huge beast of a car) and he shouted at her to stop. She started waving her hands at us in anger so I yelled that she’d just hit someone and knocked them over. She then went on to pull off to the left (I think).

She was driving “slowly” in middle of the road, across the center line. I think she had her right signal on. She really didn’t know she’d hit anyone and was really pissed at all the riders on the road.

Hope you are OK (and finished). That was a tough race day.

I should have read all the posts. Looks like everything’s been covered. I just registered with SlowTwitch to post this.

Glad you finished and are OK.

Two James’s to the rescue (sort of)…bizarre.

I have been going to IMC now in various capacities for 20 years. I decided back in the mid 90’s that it was getting too hectic to go out on the course while the race is on - and now there is 1000 more people in the race and many more in town to watch the race. Many people involved with the race quietly urge people to not go out on the course on race day - friends and family members in particular. They are contributing significantly to already moderately heavy traffic on these roads on race day. Clearly no one is listening, caring or paying attention. It seems to be a common scenario with these races and the people that go to them.

Again it’s one of these situations where, the race, to protect itself and the participants, will have to step in at some point, and have to play the heavy on something that is common-sense.** **It’s really simple - stay off the bike course on race day!

It’s OK to drive out to Richter Pass or Yellow Lake early or where ever to stay for the duration of the race and cheer people on - that’s OK but don’t, try and drive around the bike course while the race is on.** **That, with all due respect, is just plain foolish.

For the traffic after Richter Pass It was as Bad as I have seen it . But it does need to be mentioned that most of the recurring traffice was Family with Cameras and bike racks…WTF? They think their racer will need a ride back…Have them stay by the pool have a few drinks and come to the finish line. Most veteran spectators watch from Green mtn rd. then walk up to Yellow lake and then take green mtn road back. Painless. Sorry to hear of Your Crash!
