Ironman Bike Leg Do you Ever stop

Yup - done 3 iron mans all between 11:30 and 12:20 and each one stopped for a few (2 to 3) mins on the bike for a pee, stretch and crouch “adjustment”…

I have never had the need to stop since my KM40 is so comfortable…however I have noticed large groups of P3 riders congregating at special needs trying to convince eachother to ignore the pain and continue…

You’re getting detention for this Mr!!!

Glad to hear this as I am doing my first IM in Kona on my KM40. I think it’s real comfy, too.

I had a 52cm KM40 that didnt fit just right, sold it and bought a P3. I loved both bikes but wish I had a Km40 that fit perfect (by my standards) to ride again.

OK… I’m a P3 owner but I gotta admit, that made me laugh!

I’ve done 5 ironmans and have stopped at a few of them - mostly at the special needs station. One race I had to stop 5 or 6 times to pee.

I know I would be losing time, but does anyone do it anyway?

At IMFL I got off the bike after 100 miles to massage a foot cramp and make some shoe adjustments. I rode in much faster than if I’d fought the cramp for 12 more miles. At GFT I stayed on the whole ride. With that distance you have to listen to your body. If you feel that you need to get off and refresh then that’s probabaly what you need to do. Obviously i don’t mean you should make it a bike tour but if you’re feeling wasted then taking 10 might save you 20 in the long run.

I don’t stop for 1/2 distances unless I really have to pee, but on a full distance I usually plan to stop for 30 secs maybe twice to do a full leg/arm/neck/back stretch. I find that I am substantially faster/feel better after 30 seconds of stretch. Of course, until recently I was riding on a backbreaker of a 1985 Cannondale… :frowning:

Depends what your aim is. If you want a good time (for you), then “unnecessary” stop waste time. Avoiding dead time is the easiest way to gain time. Smoother transitions, less stops, less walking etc are easy ways to gain time, more so than by swimming/biking/running faster. Having said that there have been a few IM champions who have had 4-5minute “rests” at T2 (i.e. drafting penalties). So sometimes a break may make you faster. How’s that for a politicians answer!
