Ironman Arizona Countdown...Are You Ready?

With Arizona less than 9 weeks out…who is feeling like their training is going along as planned? What kind of mileage are people putting up? Who needs a kick in the rear in order to get started?

Training is going good, but is anyone ever satisfied! I keep telling myself I could do more, but so far everything is working perfectly. No injuries, only one head cold that killed 2 days of training. And I can’t stop thinking about IMAZ, its will be my first, so I’m trying really hard not to think about goal times, and concentrate on “running the run”.

Last week bike: 5 hours
Last week run: 4 hours
Last week swim: 1 hour

I keep wanting to bike more, must my main goal is to get to the line injury free, so its been a slow build! Super windy ride in Boulder this weekend, and rolling hills on a 10 mile run…putting lots of deposits in the IM bank!!!

I’m almost there physically, and close mentally too.

Right now, I’m on Day 5 of a 10 day solo (well, semi-solo as another ST’er was with me for the first 3 days) training camp in Palm Desert., California. So far:

Day 1: 100 mile bike / 6 mile run (brick)
Day 2: 112 mile bike (race pace effort) / 6 mile run (brick)
Day 3: 101 mile bike / 3 mile run (brick)
Day 4: 35 mile bike / 10 mile run (brick); evening 2K yard swim
Day 5: 12 mile single-track trail run over desert scrub (so much fun) / 40 mile ride / 2K swim
Day 6 (planned): 4 hour bike / 1 hour run / 2k swim
Day 7 (planned): 2 hour trail run / 2 hour bike
Day 8 (planned): 3 hour bike /1-1.5 hour run / 2k swim
Day 9 (planned): 6 hour bike / 45 minute run
Day 10 (planned): 2 hour ride / 2 hour trail run (brick)

Should end up with back to back weeks of 400 miles on the bike. Came into this ‘camp’ off of a big running block that ended with a huge PR for half mary. Feeling good about the bike and run, but still haven’t had the chance to really focus on the swim and get things in order there.

Plus, I got my new Spiuk Kronos in the mail the other day!

9:59:59 or better is the goal

John, way to go! I’m soooo jealous of the training you’re putting in. I really hope you reach your goal in April! By the way, what is a Spiuk Kronos?

I’ve gone over to the dark side, so to speak, and sold my “I care what I look like during a race” soul and went aero: http://www.spiukusa.com/...ts/Kronos/index.html

Ifeel lucky to get this break to traing, and realized that as I was running through the desert this morning and the sun was rising up over the mountains…it was absolutely beautiful. Of course, I owe a huge amount to my wife for giving me a free pass this week!

I respectfully ask that we refrain from posting countdown threads. It is causing me too much stress!!!

I’m behind on my training. I’ve been fighting off some bug for the past two weeks and was finally able to get on the trainer for an hour last night. On top of that, I’ve been dealing with PFS in my left knee for four weeks. Needless to say, my training has been worthless during the past month. It’s not very good timing with April just around the corner.

Did I already thank you for reminding me how soon it is?!?!

You are right…you have crossed over to the dark side. You are a bad, bad man!

I’m READY!!! Training is going well. I got a cold this weekend which has knocked out 2 days of training for me. I’m hoping to hop back on the computrainer tomorrow night for some good hill repeat intervals. This will be my first full IM. I’m trying not to psych myself out. I’m just pumped and extremely excited.

My training was going pretty well until last Tuesday, when I did this: http://www.underwaterplanet.com/gallery/albums/album20/shoulder.jpg

Grade III AC separation. Still going to try to get to IMAZ

I bought a trainer, got back on the bike Saturday for 1:15, and 1:30 last night. Been in the pool once (kicking and left arm swimming, using it as an opportunity to balance my stroke  ). Been on the elliptical once, going to try a short easy run tonight to see what’s giong on with that. Worse comes to worse I am walking the run, I suppose.

First IM.

OK … nobody can really be ready because we haven’t had weather and water concerns posted yet!
TTL is 56 degrees today(F) … how can we survive on race day … will it warm up … will wet suits be legal???

It was 81 degrees out this past Sunday … what will be the temp on race day … could it be in the 90’s or will it be cool. How strong will the wind be …???

Dave

My training is going pretty well, and getting better each week. Getting in lots of quality on the bike as well as some good volume and great recovery rides. Running is coming back and I think I will be ready to bump up the run volume signifigantly this week and next before my super secret 5 week build recipe before my full two week taper. Swimming is going great too!!! 10,000-15,000 yds/week, about 10-12 hrs/week on the bike and 3 hrs running last week(4 this week, 5 next week etc…). Now, if we can just get a good day out there then everything should be great!!!

Swimming at this point is more of an idea really rather than anything I do in training, as the weather warms I am getting more and more
miles on the bike, personal time trials in gusty winds to prepare for the madness, commuting to work helps. Running is on par, hard and harder runs. Look for the guy
at the front of the pack winning the race, then go back about 1600+ competitors, that will be me.

Joey G.

There is still time to start training.

My training “feels” good but just in the last week I read another training plan that made me feel like I wasn’t doing enough… The plan I read shows for the 5 weeks ending 2/24/08 you/me should be biking 175mi, swimming 8-10Kyds and running 38mi. Then for the following 4 weeks it shows you/me should be biking 200+mi, swimming 10K+yds and running 40+mi. Is anyone planning to do that much biking?

Here is my log so far…

Not going at all as planned! But… I didn’t plan on breaking my wrist, either. I got the cast off my arm last week and I am SO HAPPY to be able to swim again! And ride my bike outside! Now it’s time to focus.

I broke my wrist in August, and it was frustrating as hell being in an arm cast. I’m sure you’ve thought of it, but being careful in the first rides outside as the jarring of the road will cause some twinges of pain. FWIW, I continued to wear my soft cast (the splint they put my arm in before and after the hard cast) on road rides for about a month…just to be extra safe - I also wrapped it loosely in an ACE bandage, for additional peace of mind.

Good luck!

I had 18 hours, then 15 last week, this week the minneapolis winter weather finally dragged me down and I have been sick. I would stay away from comparing much and stick to your plan. Yes there are guys biking 200 miles on this forum and running 50 mil/wk - but I’d say at this point stick to what you can do cause all those little injuries will come to haunt you later (I did my itb in 1 week before twincities marathon last year trying to ramp up too fast).

Keep it up people, we have less than 60 days!

Training is going well here, minus the weather sucks. 18 mile run today in the snow/cold/ice. Morgantown, WV isn’t the best winter to train in.

My swims and runs are pretty good to where I want to be, actually my runs are better. However I’m slacking on the bike, I’ve only been taking spin classes, usually 2 or 3 back to back… but I need to get on my bike and get outside.

Everything is going well here, but this is my first full so I am sort of wondering if I am on target. Today I did a long run in my new asics ds trainer 13s. I have broken them in but need to figure out how to lace them so that my toes don’t hit the top of the shoes. I hate shoe changes!!

Thanks for the updates! They calm me down and freak me out. It’s a roller coaster of emotions.

winter weather finally dragged me down and I have been sick

Ditto. My wife was sick last week and by magic I am sick this week. So far I have not sacrificed much, but Friday will be the true test. I am supposed to run with a training partner and the pace definitely gets elevated vs. my alone runs.

My wife is out of town this weekend so I was going to train like mad. Normal guys don’t first think of “more workouts” when they hear their wife is going out of town.

Another 2 months on a spin bike is torturous. Yuck!
