Ironman 70.3 Newfoundland (1)

any doing it this year?

anyone rode the bike course? 2x500ft climbs… otherwise pretty flat.

Couldn’t pull it off for this year but wanting to next year maybe. Looking to live vicariously through someone else for now while I do Steelhead instead.

There were a few posts yesterday: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?do%3Dpost_view_flat%3Bsb%3Dpost_latest_reply%3Bso%3DASC%3Bpost%3D1403767%3B=Previous+Thread&jump=forum%3D1

I’ve cycled over much of the course in previous years. The big hill should not be that bad. Nothing in Newfoundland is really flat. The rest of the course will be gentle rollers. However wind could be a big major factor. (Including the potential of a substantial headwind coming off the bay while climbing that hill.)

I’m doing it, I’ll try to write about the days leading up to the race and the race itself while I’m over there. I am really looking forward to it.

The downside is that I’m driving there from Halifax, with my parents. The thought makes me cringe, but they wanted an excuse to go to Newfoundland and they say that they need a reason to go. Apparently, that I’m doing a race somewhere is a reason to go there.

Wind is your friend!. At least that’s what I’m trying to tell myself!. I just dropped my bike off at AC Cargo, hopefully it will be in Deer Lake when I get there next Thursday!.

to me, that looks like lots of REAL little rollers but it’s so hard to tell from an elevation chart.

keep me posted, looking forward to hearing how well it was run, etc. and the accomidations and chances to do other stuff. I’d be going out for a week with DW and no kids. So need things to do pre-race to keep from going nuts and then things to do post-race which don’t involve a lot of steps :-p A course like that I intend on hammering and hurting plenty later.

Pretty serious line-up for the Pro men, with Craig Alexander, someguy name Bjorn, Kieran Doe, Pete Jacobs, Dave Harju, etc. Rode this course about 200 times over the last 5yrs, each 45km lap is about 35km of down in the bars riding and 10kms of longish climbs/rollers. Expect strong headwinds on the out sections from T1 towards Corner Brook…as well the descent at the turnaround is FAST, be very aware of other riders and crosswinds. A friend has been swimming the course in the last week, said the water is freezing 13’C, leave your sleeveless at home.

Brrrrrrrrrrr!! I better see if I can get a neopreme cap…

Oh crap. All I have is a sleeveless.
