Ironkids San Diego- NOW WITH PICS!

Unfortunately, there’s a HUGE void of kid’s triathlons here in SoCal.

we already had this year’s event but here’s the link for next year (bring your bike and i’ll even take you for a ride the day before). we have a festival area for the kids with face painting, bounce houses, a climbing wall, food (we went thru 600 hot dogs!), etc so they get to play when they’re done.

oh and the 25 month old son of one of our local Ironman vets competed in the 6 & under division so you son could race too!

speaking of san diego, our timing guy’s son raced yesterday (on a 48cm cervelo i found for him) and won his age group and was second in his age division (2 yr brackets right?). he’s definitely hooked as he’s already asked to borrow my disc wheel!

We were there yesterday too, cheering on my granddaughter. Epic conditions for those kids… I was freezing because I dressed for a day in San Diego, not San Francisco. Hey, isn’t Greg Welch the best tri annoucer on the planet? Glad you all had a good time.

Welchy was classic! It was obvious he recruited his own daughter and all his neighbors to do the race. He was great with the kids on the mic! Not sure why the hell he was wearing sandals though! Ha, ha.

Very cool Michael! Not sure I’d drive all the way to Fresno for her to race though. I’d probably just hold an unofficial tri in our culdesac before I’d do that, but it underscores my point. Here in Southern Cal, there’s definitely a market for kids triathlons, but no one putting them on.

Nice RR! The kids tri’s are some of my favorite races of the year.

Unfortunately, there’s a HUGE void of kid’s triathlons here in SoCal. Kinda strange considering it’s such a hotbed of the sport and I think lots of triathlete families would jump at the chance to get their kids into it.
My son is 2 1/2, so a few more years before I can get him into it.

I am pretty sure that there use to be a series in San Diego, and the race connected to the International Tri lasted a couple more years. There was even a week long summer camp leading up to one of the races to help introduce kids to the sport. My swim coach was one of the camp coaches and that’s how I got into triathlons when I was 10 or 11. It would be nice to see something like that again.
