…what is the proper way to iron the pleat on the upper back of dress shirts? I know my way around the ironing board on flat surfaces, but this is different. And yes, I have a GF but she couldn’t (won’t?) iron her way out of a damp pillowcase.
The correct way to deal with this is to wear a jacket…
I now have a deeper understanding of your screen name.
what is this thing called ironing??
Also saves time on the sleeves. Actually, you only have to do half of the front and you’re set. I need more jackets.
To answer Jacki, the answer is…I don’t know, but it costs about $4 per shirt.
It is an ancient ritual performed using a molten lump of “iron” that has been ground smooth on one side so as to facilitate the flattening of fabric. It is done in a special room using a uniquely shaped “board” often with incantations and supplications to the gods of steam and starch.
at the risk of losing “man points” I will try and give you a serious answer. I hook the shoulders of the shirt around the ironing board and pull down from the shirt tail until the crease is nicely formed. Then hit it with the iron and you’re done. Repeat for the other side.

Putting the “iron” back in ironman, huh?
I hang the the middle, upper back of the shirt over the small end of the board. Roughly hand form the pleats, spray with a little starch and hit 'em with the iron.
When you finish up, yell “Jacki&Boudreaux, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!!!”.
Don’t bother getting the tattoo.

susanherself says, “that’s really funny!”

So, if i am visualising this correctly, this method creates a pleat the full length of the back?
no. just 6 inches or so, until the pleat ends. not all shirts have the pleat either, so don’t try and make one if it is not ‘standard equipment’ on your garment.
to clarify, i put the shoulder over the square end of the board and just tug on the bottom of the shirt. you’ll see it.
robert
got it, thanks.

Problem is you can do that but I guess it takes some skills to get the pleats nicely lined up to iron correctly in the first place. I used to try it with mixed success but now leave it to wifey or the maid who can do it better anyway.
The MAID!..why didn’t I think of her in the first place?
Giselle! Come hither! I need thy special skills to flatten my fabric!

Giselle! Come hither! I need thy special skills to flatten my fabric!

Maybe it’s just me, but in my mind that statement had nothing to do with ironing…
what is this thing called ironing??
Well you don’t think skis wax themselves, do you?
Now that’s the kind of maid I want, ironing my shirts, taking care of my trousers and the one eyed trouser snake within. I’ll take her on my training runs as well.
but somehow I think the wifey might not be that enthused.
You pay $4/shirt. Ouch! Its only $2.25 where I go. You may want to shop around?
$2.25 a shirt? For once it is good to be in DC. I get mine done for $.99 each.
I’ve got you beat - it’s only $0.99 Canadian for my DH’s shirts here in Toronto!! ![]()
