IronCowboy 50/50/50 Progress thread

This guy just keeps on going, cool stuff. These next few days will be tough

i’m thinking this picture is from the crash as in the background of one of the crash fotos you can see a cop car. i’m really hope he can get on top of the sleep and heat.

Did you see the comments on his Facebook? so many people thought he actually got arrested.

Well, it kinda sorta does look that way. Any ideas on what exactly the policeman is doing???

I’m psyched. He’s going to be in GA on Saturday riding the Silver Comet Trail, which coincidentally I will also be doing my long ride there at the same time. Hoping to see him out there and shout a few words of encouragement!

Has anyone road or ran with him yet? He is in GA on 6/27 and riding the silver comet. Would be a blast to do this with him and meet him. I would love to do this 50/50/50 effort, but don’t think I’d make it past a week. Thanks for re-threading this one. Other post was lame and to negative for me.

If you skim fast through the other “lame” thread and just ignore the “haters”, you’ll see that around 6 or 7 St-ers have actually met the IC and he has had ST-ers swim, bike, and run with him:)

i know the “prediction” thread is a lot to go through, and I’ve only seen maybe a tenth of it, but someone there did talk about going out, joining him on the run, etc.

Day 16 Update - June 22, 2015 - From ironcowboy.com’s blog:
BY DAVID WARDEN
Day 16 Splits
Swim: 1:22:21
Bike: 6:58:56
Run: 6:58:03
Total: 15:19:20
You know its a tough day when your marathon time is the same time as your 112 mile bike time. That run time includes 1.5 hours of non-moving time. Still, this is James’ first 15+ hour day since Day 11. That isn’t necessarily bad if he’s resting longer during the day and his total recovery time in 24 hours is still 7-8 hours. I should be getting more regular weigh-ins from Sunny. She confirms that his weight pre-swim today was 163.2. The day before the project he was 168. 5 pounds lost in a given day from an IM is typical, but having that be his recovery weight is a bit concerning. I hope to get more regular weights so we can track this daily. I regret the short bog today. I actually spent some time with James on the phone covering several issues, and much of the day researching his questions. I regret I can’t share all the details, but we’ll give you as much information as possible.

I’m not sure if this is the right approach.

Is he genuinely resting and recovering during his daytime breaks and getting some sleep or is there too much nose and too many distractions? Kids, fans, media, answering questions, planning, etc when he should be sleeping.

Stopping for a while may feel good, but unless it makes you feel better, it is a waste of time.

Way better to knock it out in one solid day then have a proper 7 or 8 hours of rest and recovery between days. It would eliminate the running past midnight and associated sleepmonsters that come with the body’s circadian rhythms. Hopefully make riding safer after a good night’s sleep as well.

The toe and now falling asleep on the bike. He appears to have some problems to work out or this could end very quickly.

I was just quoting David Warden’s write-up from IC’s blog but agree 100% he needs to get better sleep. He could kill himself falling asleep on the bike.

Ty for starting new thread!!! I really could not wade through all that negativity. Sad I can’t make it out this weekend. Looking forward to what my friends enjoy.

Just wanted to put in - the rest during the heat of the day will actually help him recover better - it’s smarter than pushing through. It’s a good game plan. The slower he goes the more days he can do. Coolness f the night is their friend. It’s amazing what the body can handle when limited sleep becomes the norm. Recovery is going to be nasty - but so hoping they get to do all 50!
Impressed he hasn’t gained weight and is lingering at only a deficit 5. I would have expected a bigger variation (first up then down) by now.

Hang tough Ironcowboy team!

Agreed.

As I mentioned on the other thread, it’s a trade off. Increased recovery and rest vs longer, slower time on the road.

I’m still not convinced that he is finding the required balance. (Although I am only watching online).

Limited sleep can be a disaster for this, supressing the immune system and increasing the susceptibility to picking up a virus. This is hard enough to do with everything going right, let alone when trying to keep illness at bay. Sadly, having all the kids around too also increases the risk of picking up a virus.

Not to mention already falling asleep on the bike with over a month still to go.

Limited sleep becoming the norm is not good.

Recovery shouldn’t be nasty at this point. It should be routine, effective and efficient.

No reason for him to have gained weight. Suspect he will lose a bit more yet though.

As you say, “hang tough, IC.”

Going indoor today. As per his FB:

Attention Mississippi! EVERYTHING IS MOVING INDOORS TOMORROW! We need to keep our cowboy healthy**, and at the moment that’s going to require some air conditioning and a less dangerous road…like no danger at all

**Per FB “The body actual feels great today considering I didn’t think I’d be able to start this morning after yesterday’s toe issues. My hip is killing as it took the brunt of the crash on the bike today”

I am fine with him going inside. Even if he was inside for 10/50, I would be fine with that.

I would rather he go inside for a few and make it, than refuse to go inside, and not make it.

I *think *the cop was helping them out post-crash. He’s in the background of a bunch of other post-crash shots. He’s also got a goofy grin on as he “arrests” IC.

As a man that hates being short on rest, I would feel only despair thinking about another 30 days with only 5-6 hours sleep. They need to figure that out.

yes, i am quite certain it was a staged photo - likely requested by either the infamous “wingmen” or James himself. the guy doesn’t seem to know how NOT to have fun.

I’m not sure if this is the right approach.

He has been posting his tentative schedule the past few days which looks like a pattern, it looks like this:

Swim start: 7:30am -8:00am
Swim finish: 9:00am - 9:30am
T1: 1/2 hour to 1 hour
Bike start: 10:00am
Bike finish: 4:30pm - 5:00pm
T2: 2 hours to 2.5 hours
Run start: 7:00pm
Run finish: midnight to ?

That police officer is a local triathlete – just completed his first 70.3 at Chattanooga in May. He’s really turned his health around in the last few years and has lost something like 175 pounds.

He’s an incredibly nice man and has rightly become a minor celebrity within the Chattanooga Triathlon Club thanks to his social media presence.

Many of my fellow club members joined the Cowboy yesterday (I didn’t). I assume the officer was just showing him some Southern hospitality in his own special way

I hope that I am wrong, but I feel like we are seeing the beginning of the end…

i know. i haven’t wanted to say it cause he seems to sandbag sometimes, but i’m worried. BUT he seems to sandbag and then pull it out. he’s indoors and crazy as it seems to “say” he can take it easier today. i don’t know how much the hip will bother the run though so there is that…

I posted in the other thread, which was sadly pointless thanks to that guy, but if they can’t get a handle on the sleep situation I think it’s all going to fall apart. Physically I don’t doubt he’s capable, but sleep deprivation creates a whole host of issues each of which could derail this attempt. Without a concerted and dedicated effort to get the IC at least 6 hours of sleep (not rest) a night I can’t see him going much past 30.

I really hope they pull this off, but they’ve got some serious issues to work on besides the daunting task of an IM a day.
