Ironaman Training?

Training for my first IM in Lake Placid this year. My training was cruising along with big workouts up to 3 hours on the bike and 14 mile runs. I have been nothing but consistent up to about a week ago. I began to get some pain in my right lower leg. To avoid further injury it was recommended that I take a week off of running. Increased both bike and swim during this time. Three days after the leg injury I contracted a nasty stomach virus which shut all activity down for two… now going on three days. Long story short… I am panicking… Is it normal to miss workouts like this and still stay on track??

this is what happens when you ironaman. itt is quite hazardous to your health, and against the law.

The race is 6 months away - I’d tone it down a bit. You do not need to be riding more than 2 hours and running more than 1:15.

Last year (and this year) I was training 10-12 hours at this time of the year including more weight work and pr’ed the thing going a bit under 10 hours. I wouldn’t worry too much about losing fitness - just stay strong and lean for the important months beginiing in March.

dude, relax it’s only january. if you want to hear panick, you should have heard me last february. my doctor told me i can’t ride my bike for 3 months (feb-april) at least and may not be able to the rest of the year. well, i was getting ready for placid too so my coach at the time just had me run 6X/wk (min 1hr each) plus swim and lift weights as normal. long story short, i got back on my bike in may and did placid in 11:27 which was a big pr for me.
most triathletes don’t take enough down time anyway - most have to get it forced on them like me and you. look at it as a blessing. by the way, 14 mile runs in january for a july ironman is pretty serious. make sure you don’t get burned out physically or mentally. the last 12 weeks before im is the training that really matters. good luck!

Relax, relax, relax. The only time to panic is at the start of the swim. After that it is all fun.

I did Lake Placid in 04 and in january I was mostly spinning(cold weather state) 3-4 hours per week and running 3-4 days, with a long run of 10 miles with most of the runs between 5-6 miles.

Remember your goal is to get to the starting line fit and healthy.

Last February my fiance surpsrised me with a 5 day trip to Costa Rica. During those 5 days I ran only once and ate like an american in Costa Rica. It was perfect timing as it occured just before I started ramping up my mileage in March and April.

Both physical and mental rest days are very, very important to ironman training.

Good luck and relax.

It’s hopeless, your screwed, quit the sport and send me your race wheels. Actually it’s nothing but hopeful. I was down for 6 days over Christmas w/ a stomach virus. No big deal gave me extra time to nap. I don’t feel like I lost any fitness. Just take it easy the first three or four days back into training as you will probably be a bit tired still. Even missing three to four days of training in the 2-12 week window before IM isn’t going to set you back.
