As someone who has never tried to get into Irish whiskey, but loves bourbon…
What is a good bottle to try in say the $25-50 range. Although open to spending more than that if it’s worth it. I typically stay within the $50-100 range for bourbon, but I have a general idea of what I’m getting when I’m picking up a bottle so am happy to spend that.
I like Jameson as a regular mixer, BLep does not. The Jameson Black Barrel is tasty. And I am fine with Tullamore Dew as well.
But one of the reasons I like Irish whiskeys is the availability and accessibility of some better options. RedBreast 12 year comes in at $75, that would be my suggestion.
ETA - The only one I have come across that I truly think is a waste of time is Bua. It was recommended to me by someone at the liquor store and I am always open to new things so I bought some. Not good enough to choose to drink on its own and in cocktails it just completely disappears.
I am suprised no love for the Tulla. For the same basic price as Bushie and Jamie I usually go for the Tullys. There still is in Ireland a bit of Northern vs Southern bias with the Bush and the James trees. Don’t think the others are involved in the bias. We visited Kilbeggan. It is a nice little place and they had one of their labels had as much peat bog smoke as any of the Laphroaig labels. My opinion is the no right answer for “the best” lots of good ones out there but some people still pick Budlight.
I picked up a bottle of Two Gingers once - it was on sale and I was curious. I quickly found out why it was on sale. I think I choked down just enough to confirm that it was godawful and poured the rest down the drain.
There is a wonderful world of very good whiskey based cocktails. Good liquor makes good cocktails. Shit liquor makes shit cocktails. Jameson comes in at $51 for 1.75l. So good whiskey at an affordable price.
