Iranians love us?

I just saw a show about Iran on PBS. It seems that all of the people they met on the street “love us”. If there is so much love for the American people, how do they reconcile that with our official policies about Israel. Do they think that we, the people, are good and kind and wonderful, but our government is a pawn, held captive by the nasty zionists? (sorry for tongue in cheek editorializing)

Has anyone been to Iran lately? What’s going on? Is the Islamist government popular, or waiting to fall? Is the anti-Israel rhetoric shared by the public, or is it the “official”, but unpopular stance?

How much of a threat is Iran to us? …to Israel?

Maybe Casey will chime in as I think he rode his bike through there a year or two ago…

My understanding is that a very large chunk of the population is young (post-Islamic revolution) and lack the hatred and anti-western sentiments of their parents.

This isn’t unusual. They like American citizens but dislike our government (gee, can’t imagine why). Isn’t this the same with us? I have no animosity towards the Iranian people but I have a bit less affection for their government.

That was a good show, btw.

Tood bad about the “Death to Israel” poster in the mosque, though.

I wonder why Iran has such hatred for Israel. Hasn’t Islam had relatively more tolerance of Jews than the West? Imagine a middle east where Israel was completely accepted within the financial/military/cultural/economic sphere. That would increase the other nations’ wealth and prestige immensely, I think.

Is it because Israel is basically a european implant perceived as the product of western colonialism? They obviously don’t give two shits about the Palestinians, or they’d have absorbed them. Since when did Persians hold a great love for Arabs, anyway?

Iran uses the hate of Israel as a nationalizing force. Truth be told much of the power within the country is held by various religious sects and there is a constant fight for power. The standard of living in Iran could be much better, should be, but the rigidity of religious law and the terror used to promote it, has set Iran back decades.

I did bike across the U.S and then Europe, Turkey, parts of Iran, Pakistan and into India and without hesistation that we were treated the best by the Muslims in the region. We could not get through a village without people waving us down and inviting us in for dinner. It really was a struggle to leave and when we did, were provided so many provisions we could not carry it on our bikes. I have never experienced anything like it. In contrast, the people in America and Europe, although friendly, were more concerned with their daily lives. We never felt safer anywhere in the world than we did in Iran. The only areas of Turkey and Pakistan where we felt a little unsafe was when we were in tourist areas as the people tended to act differently, similar to what you would get in a port city in places like South America or the inner cities of America.

It was not easy crossing the border as the government has a lot of control over things. I think there is a lot of dissatisfaction with the goverment because of the poor economy and ultimately, that will bring them down. They use fiery anti-Israel and anti-American rhetoric to distract the people from the economy but the people are not stupid. They don’t speak a lot about their governmen out of fear but they have no problem with America. Their is anti-Israeli sentiment but really the people are like us, they want to work, provide for their families and live in peace. The same I have found around the world. It really is too bad that we have so many that think that the average person on the street’s only goal in life is to kill Americans.

There are people who think Iran is a threat to the U.S?

Of course some thought Iraq was a threat to us so I shouldn’t be surprised. As for Israel, they will never embrace them but I see no reason why the threat is any more than posturing to show who the boss is in the Middle East (and it is Iran) and to try to distract the people.

If I had one wish it would be that all Americans were required to travel in the Middle East, particularly in the Muslim countries to see for themselves the reality of the world. It would do more to eliminate fear than anything else.

Amen, Casey. People really are more alike than different. very nice and informative post…thanks!

Lots, of course. The simple truth is, as you said, there is a disconnect between the govt (religious sects) and the people themselves. Unfortunately, it is the govt who controls their military and their intelligence service and their ties to terrorist entities. So, are the bulk of the Iranian people a threat? Probably not. Is the nation of Iran a threat? Of course it is. Our ships in the Persian Gulf are directly challenged and threatend on a regular basis. Is Iran a threat to the American way of life? Probably not, at least not directly. They do have ties to terrorism and to groups who do attack Americans or our allies (Israel), which makes them, by definition, a threat.

“I wonder why Iran has such hatred for Israel”

I’m sure the average Iranian on the street doesn’t give two hoots one way or the other, but the poster is official government policy. People are people all over the world - most just want to live in peace. It’s governments and politics that start conflicts.

I realize I am being naive when I visit the small towns of Iran and am met with nothing but warmth. It’s probably not too different from biking through rural Iowa or a small town in most of the countries in the world. It really is true that if people were just left alone without the elected or non-elected government’s “national interests” at stake, we could probably do a pretty good job of getting along. For most people, politics is local and most could not care less what happens across the border let alone across the ocean.

I often remind myself of that when I hear about these big stimulus packages, more government involvement in our lives and people who look to Obama or whoever is in the Whitehouse to save them. Why we insist on more government when they have always messed things up is beyond me.

The whole time I was watching this show, I was thinking, “geez… Iranian women are really pretty”. So much for global politics.

Now you can understand how I felt biking through there, with my wife

Well there are plenty of them right under your nose! And also let me tell you some insider info, in general, they find white guys (my apology if you are not one) quite attractive.
