Well am about to get an iPod, and am looking at either getting a mini (while they are still avail), or a nano. I am leaning towards the mini, but the size may be the determining factor. Just wondering what people out there who run with the mini think of it? Do you run with it on your arm or elsewhere? Just curious as I don’t want to drop $300+ on something and have it be a little too big.
i have a mini and a shuffle…I tend to ride with the mini and run with the shuffle.
let me know if you want a deal on a mini…I am liquidating mine.

I would get the nano 4 gig no hard drive, no skip on the run. I have a shuffel and a ibook . love both
I have a mini, recently got a nano for my wife - I would definitely recommend the nano if you are going to use it for running. The nano is so much smaller and lighter, no hard disk so no skipping problems, and at 4GB, it holds plenty of music - Rip at 64kbps if you want to get more songs on it.
I would like to know if anyone has had first-hand experience with the mini, or a full-sized iPod skipping while running. My understanding is the music doesn’t stream off the hard drive, rather 25 minutes or so of music is bursted into RAM from the hard drive in just a few seconds. Then, when that 25 minutes has been listened to, the HD spins up and bursts another 25 minutes then shuts down. I don’t see how it can skip when it operates like that. I have a mini and it has not skipped while I run.
I don’t run with my mini, so my comment above was maybe a bit misleading. What I would say is that with no hard drive the nano is likely to be more resistant in the long term to damage from impact or jarring. I’ll retract the mini-skipping-risk part.
smaller, lighter ,the latest Why go mini ?? Give me the old frame . I like 5 speed better. no no I like the new nano . The 12th apple is doing some new .So wait till the 12th I don’t know what but I would wait.

I have a nano and love it. I’ve run with it, I have an armband and had no trouble.
I had the mini, the shuffle and the iPod (my husband is a fanatic) and I have run with each one of them. I ran with the iPod in my hand, the mini and shuffle on an arm band. I never had any one of them skip.
I have to think the hard drive issues that plagued the mini are part of the reason for the discontinuation. It wouldn’t make sense to me to purchase a product that’s already obsolete. I’ve run with both the mini and nano, loved the mini until the hd failure, love the nano even more.
The mini and full size iPod won’t skip when you run, work great in fact for a while. . . but on one of your runs it’ll chatter and shut down on you with an unrecoverable hard drive error…you’ll reformat and get 30% of the drive and then later that’ll dissapear…and then you’ll find out that your warantee is void because you ran with it…
While we are at it…I know that compressed music is very displeasing to some of you on general principles, but that aside, you guys have opinions on Nano sound quality versus Mini/SHuffle/30Gig sound quality?
Can you charge and update a Nano with the firewire connector, or is this USB only device?
Get a portable 8-track.
Just kidding.
if your looking for music during activity or short trips its hard to beat the nano…i had a mini and found it flopped around when running…the all metal case does add heft…so i traded for a nano and it is incredibly small, slim and light. no problems now.
cant really even fault it for transfer through the USB at 4G it handles enough songs so i am not constantly ripping or shifting files around…
the screen is much nicer than a mini as well, i find the sound quality at 128kb/sec to be nearly perfect through headphones or connected to bose roomates.
well worth the cost…and i squeak when i walk, a bit on the bike too.
Go with the Nano. I am in my third mini. They’re great, but it only takes one drop to break them. The Nano doesn’t have this problem, since it’s all Flash memory - no hard drive like in the Mini
Look at this link. I was impressed with the beating that the Nano can take:

Totally scratched! That’s one of the chief complaints about iPods. Mine go straight to a protective case as soon as I buy them.
try some brasso to remove the scratches on the case.

My full sized 4 meg Ipod will regularly lock up when running. I use it when riding (volume low enough I can hear cars, but sometimes lose the music in the wind noise of the helmet), but have a shuffle for running. Rubber band it to my hat and I’m off.
My Mini kept freezing when running so bought a shuffle and this is great - I read in the paper that many Nano are suffering from a faulty screen - some report only having it for an hour and the screen cracked. Not sure if this was a batch problem of more problematic.
try some brasso to remove the scratches on the case.

Will try that, thanks!
Ooooh! I feel like that diabolic avocado person. Called you to the task. Now, I’m scorned by millions (thousands? hundreds?)
