iPod touch: talk to me about it

From what I understand, it’s the same thing as the iPhone, just minus the phone. If you have a wireless connection, can you text/e-mail? How about viewing MS Office attachments to e-mail? Anybody using one as their PDA?

Yes to your first question. I’ve viewed attachments without an issue as this is covered by Safari(which both the iPhone and iTouch uses). I actually got the iPhone and unlocked it to be used as a pay as you go phone. This allows me to use it as an iTouch but also an an emergency phone.

It’s not just like the iPhone, but it’s close. You can surf and connect to e-mail, but only in a wi-fi hotspot. If you’re close to one normally, it might be just fine. I’m not sure what the speed is compared to the 3G network the iPhone works on.

ipod touch devices can’t get on a regular cell phone (Edge / 3G) network, but if you have a wifi connection and a VOIP application from the app store (i.e., Skype, Fring, etc.) you can still make phone calls.

both 1st and 2nd generation touches are faster than iphones at most tasks, and Apple is heavily and successfully promoting them as a good gaming platform.

2nd generation ipod touch devices have bluetooth (at least my 2nd gen one running a beta of OS 3.0 does), but 1st gen touches running the latest production firmware (2.2.1) do not.

iPhones have GPS, touches do not.

I’ve read some less than flattering commentary on Apple’s warranty where moisture is concerned. Sounds like any trace of water on the inside, even if it’s condensation, might mean you’re out a few hundred dollars. Perhaps not the best thing to use as a trainer companion…

I’m happy w/ my Palm Treo Pro as a smartphone, so am really just looking for a new iPod. All the extras on the Touch look cool, though. Either way, I’ll get something by tomorrow.

Yea, I agree, and I’ve probably read many of the same reports on water / moisture / water vapor damage. For runs in the rain (like the one I just finished), I use a shuffle. Worst case and I’m out $50 to replace it with another from ebay.

I’m really not into running w/ music. I’d use the Touch in the car for travel and to watch movies on the trainer. I’m kinda wondering if the extra $100 is worth the step up from the Nano, which suited me fine for the last few years.

I do watch a lot of movies on the Touch and think it’s a great device for that. I’ve always thought the screen on the Nano was too small for that, but maybe it’s just my aging eyes.

iTouch doesn’t have a microphone so can’t be used as a phone even in wifi areas. Next generation is getting a mic.

You can now run epocrates on both the iphone and itouch. That’s worth something, I would think.

While it’s true that it has no built-in mic, that just means that using a headset w/mic is mandatory rather than optional as it is on the iPhone.

Epocrates will be a major use as well- clinicals start in a few weeks. It seems a bit easier to use on the iTouch than my Palm.

Folks have covered this pretty well, I just wat to say the iPod is the best toy that I have bought in some time. I have lots of wireless access, so it is very useful to me. I can use VOIP with the mic/headphone option, and my uderstanding is that wifi is faster than 3G. My biggest gripe is that my kids keep taking it to play games!
