Since anything called “Shuffle” seems like the perfect companion for me when running, I thought I would investigate this a bit. Can you put your own Mp3’s on this? I can’t really tell from the hype–it seems like they are pushing iTunes, but I don’t know if that is the only way to go.
i started a post yesterday about it which got lukewarm interest. i think it’s awesome cuz it’s got a flash drive - which means no skipping. check page 2 for more.
flash drive vs. hard drive - I didn’t know that. I’m intrigued as well. The price is right, the size is right, the memory is right and you guys all rave about the iPod software. Too bad it’s not quite ready.
according to apple it ships in 1-2 weeks.
Yes. Any iPod will play mp3 files, as well as several other formats. iTunes is simply the software on the computer that organizes all your music. It’s very simple software and you can use it to rip songs from CDs you own as well. If you want it to rip those songs to mp3 format, just make sure you select that in the preferences.
The main confusion is that the iTunes MUSIC STORE sells songs that are in the protected AAC format. iPods are the only offical device that can play that format.
And people have already been able to get them, at least at the Apple Store in San Fran…
This is what you want if you want it for running. My wife wanted an Ipod and got it for christmas. She was all excited until she ran with it. Skip, Stop, Reset, back to the store for another one. Load it up, run, skip, stop, reset, frustration. Why would anyone advertise something for runing with a hard drive? That thing s#*ked. My thought was "Why not use frash memory?" Well now they did. Now she can try the new one. I hope it's better.
MP3s you create you can put on the iPod Shuffle. MP3s you buy, maybe, maybe not. It depends on if they have any crippling licensing scheme attached to them. If you rip your own CDs, the iPod’s native AAC format will save space while sounding as good or better than MP3, although, without a critical ear and noise cancelling headphones (we all wear those on runs and rides, right?), you would be hard pressed to hear a difference. The only drawback to AAC is virtually no device other than an iPod will play it. If the iPod is your only device, who cares!
As far as Flash vs. hard drive, Apple touts the iPod mini has 25 seconds of skip protection for its 4 Gig hard drive. I haven’t had a skip yet with mine.
Strange…my iPod doesn’t do any of that when I’m running.

Yeah, she went through two of them. I really felt bad becouse she had been looking forword to using it and it was a total falure. How do you carry it? She couldn't use the arm strap, it was too loose. Tried to cary itin a fanny pack and a jacket pocket: NG
Strange…my iPod doesn’t do any of that when I’m running.
You have to get under a 16 pace.

Mine either and I’ve had it (and run with it) for nearly a year.

Since you have obviously stealing the fruits of the musician’s labors for years, tell me, does the Mp3 that we are putting on the iPod Shuffle have to have been one that was created with the iPod software, or can it be from something like Windows Media Player.
I had some problems at first running with the ipod, but after I reformatted, upgraded the software and reloaded my music it’s been working fine. I just wear it with the belt clip on the waistband of my tights. The arm band also works though I find for the 20 GB unit it’s a little bulky.
The shuffle intrigues me though. I may get one since I have a running play list that I use when I’m out. I can just load my play list on that and go. Now if they’d make a completely water tight case for it I could swim with it.

Mine doesn’t either and I run with it just about every day.
I bought a shuffle today. I’ll post back after I get it.
Yes, I have a gadget problem.
i started a post yesterday about it which got lukewarm interest.
I figured it was same old iPod BS. Then I saw a guy (Jobs???) with one around his neck and it seemed like they finally “got it”, from the standpoint of use while exercising–we don’t need small computers, we need little MP3 players. I have one of these (which is flash memory):

Sorry about the “lukewarm interest”–maybe you need to say “Free Porn” in your Subject Lines.
To use an iPod, you’ll need iTunes (which is free software). Just copy your MP3s over to iTunes. Worst case is you’ll have both Winamp (or whatever) and iTunes on your computer. If you’re worried about the licensed songs and not being able to copy/transfer them, then just don’t order anything from the iTunes store; rip the songs you want from your own CDs
You might find you like iTunes much better than the competitors. I do, but that’s probably because I’m a Mac dork.
Anyone see the new mini mac? The hardware is nice but if take into account all the software included it seems like an incredible deal. The software alone is worth a couple hundred dollars. In addition it’s virutally silent and will easily fit on even the smallest desktop.
keep in mind it doesn’t come with a keyobard or monitor. but it’s still very cool.
It’s really targeted at the folks that have PCs and have wanted to convert to a Mac, but haven’t been able to afford it. You can just use your current PC monitor, keyboard and mouse.
It’s pretty good marketing if you ask me.
Now if they had a G5 version, I have a bunch of designer friends that would be knocking people over to get one.
yeah, but who holds on to their old computer once they get a new one? so if you take the monitor and keyboard it’s harder to sell, no?
yeah, i’m with you on the g5. debating on getting a powerbook with superdrive now…
