Ipod and triathlon

Can I carry my ipod during the run on a triathlon.

???

I understand why I can’t wear it on the swim and why I can’t wear it on the bike…

Not in an IM. Not sore of USAT rules.

You could but there would be consequences. I don’t see the problem though.

USAT rules does not permit the use of any headphones. But you can probably risk it, just put them on and take them of near the transition/finish area!

I’ve certainly seen pics of people wearing them for the run in IM races. Bike is a definite no-no though, but lots of marathon runners (well it tends to be the slower ones) use them.

Well I stand corrected.

IMUK is run under British Tri rules and the rules disallow personal stereos and phones, even in transition.

You’d have to check what rules the US IM come under and then look at their regs.

You risk a DQ, but if you don’t care about having an official record of your finish, do it.

This is where those Oakley Thumpers have an advantage… no cords. I imagine someone with Thumpers could listen to music on the bike and the run and not get caught.

I’ve done a couple of races where the course marshals were DQing people with headphones on the run.

What the hell? Are you one of those, “well, everyone else is drafting so why not?” J.F.C.

It’s a rule, no headphones. Take the damned things off.

What a shitty rule. Don’t blame the refs b/c they’re just enforcing them but headphones aren’t a big deal.

Peaceful tribe to you too!

You guys take me way to seriously.

I can’t imagine being the guy who sweated his ass off for 6 hours in 95 degree heat only to look up his results and see “DQ-Headphones”. The refs in the race were standing at the beginning of a run section where we ran with traffic on the shoulder of a road open to traffic. Besides, running with headphones is like driving a Ferrari with the radio on, in both cases you’re supposed to be listening to the engine.

Who are you to tell people what the race should be for them?

Easy there, Cathy. He asked if he could wear an iPod. I told him the rules said no and the consequences for breaking the rules. Beyond that, its really up to him.

Its quite a leap to go from that to “I am a drafter,” don’t you think?

Besides, if someone is drafting off of me on the bike and then proceeds to pass me on the run with the fresh legs that he got from me, I sorta fell like he’s stolen some of my hard earned training hours. That pisses me off. I’ve been known to slam on my breaks for small animals that no one else saw

But if a guy wants to listen to a little rock & roll while he runs, I say to each his own. If he gets caught and DQ’ed, he deserved it. That was the risk he took. But if he gets away with it, doesn’t really bother me at all…

"Headphones in competition not cool.
If you want to go for a nice, scenic run with some background music, STAY AT HOME!!!

It’s a tri dang it, not a highschool dance. "

Geez, settle down Sparky! I asked a simple question and got the answer, like an hour ago. Go take one of your pretty little pink pills, close your eyes and go to your special place.

Thanks to those who gave civil answers.

I am with you on this one, never understand what the need is to listen to music while training let alone racing.

What a shitty rule. Don’t blame the refs b/c they’re just enforcing them but headphones aren’t a big deal.

A couple headphone-wearing people taking unfair advantage (motivation, distraction, whatever “helpful” thing it is that makes them want to wear them rather than not wearing them) isn’t a big deal, you are correct. The problem is that it fails the what if everyone did it test, badly. If a significant number of people did it, someone, somewhere would fail to hear a warning and step in front of a car, or fail to hear someone coming up from behind and step in front of them and injure them or any one of a number of other scenarios. One such disaster is one too many, hence the rule. If someone flouts the rule, they should definitely be penalized, as it’s clearly an unfair advantage to be the only one who can use the headphones.

If people applied the what if everyone did it test more regularly, we’d have a lot fewer problems, and a lot fewer controversies. I don’t mean just in triathlon. It’s a pretty handy corollary to the golden rule for life in general.

Neither have I but why bust someone for listening to music? In addition, maybe he/she is trying to block everyone out and just be by themselves for a while. I don’t openly complain about the horrible music they play in transition, before the race or at the finish line so why should headphones be a problem?

If you’ve ever been to a tricolumbia race that guy Vigorito plays John Tesh all damn day…

“It’s a rule, no headphones. Take the damned things off”

I totally agree. ( What kind of jack ass would I be after complaining about TNT breaking rules, if I condoned other rule infractions.)
