I use my iPod for working out indoors or long rides by myself as I’m sure many of you do. I have the 20Gig color for a little over a year and suddenely it froze mid Podcast last week. I tried letting the batteries simply wind down and then plugging it in, as that has fixed any freezes in the past. This time nothing. The computer/iTunes doesn’t even recognize the iPod. I tried resetting it like it says on the Apple website. No luck. Any ideas out there? Has anyone had this happen? And if so, how’d you fix it? Sorry this isn’t exactly tri related.
If resetting the iPod doesn’t work, then you need to restore it:
How did you reset it?
Last time my iPod (3rd Gen) froze, the Geek Squad at Bestbuy reset it and reinstalled the iPod software. The downside was that I lost all of my tunes in the process. Hopefully there’s a better solution for ya.
I had this problem with my 30gig a while back. How did it happen to freeze? Were you running or anything like that? The larger iPods have a different hard drive / memory than the smaller ones. The Nano and the shuffle operate on flash memory, which is not affected by bouncing around. The larger iPods use a typical hard-drive structure, which is affected by bouncing around. Could be your problem right there.
Anyways, I brought it back to Best Buy (where I bought mine) and had them fix it. I believe the fixed it on the spot, but I can’t recall if it was sent back to Apple or not.
And yes, I tried to do the re-set thing as well. It didn’t work when I had that problem either.
YES!!! This happened to me. You can expect Apple customer service to be extremely nice about sending you a box to return your unit; they’ll even pay the shipping. Then, a few days later, you can expect to get it back with a silly little note saying that their testing shows that your iPod was mishandled or dropped and there isn’t anything they can do about it. Oh, and the $2,500 worth of tunes you purchased from them because you wanted to the do the ethical thing and not download illegally… kiss that goodbye unless you happen to have the same computer you downloaded it on and decide to buy another one of Apple’s overpriced devices which will, without fail, will stop working one day in a year or year and a half. Yeah, I LOVE Apple Corp. Go to the Better Business Bureau and read all my great reviews.
You sure like to rant a lot. Why wouldn’t you have the computer you downloaded the music to? Also, it’s pretty easy to back up all your purchased music…there is a command right in iTunes to do that.

Yeah, I’m a ranting fool. Computer technology changes occassionally so I buy a new laptop every year. Apple just makes things like backing up music harder than it needs to be; especially for a non techie. Apple needs to make sure you’ll keep buying their products. Oh, and don’t get me started on Apple’s extended warranty program. For the love of God, don’t get me started.
when you buy a new laptop how do you transfer all your other programs and files? you can do the exact same thing with iTunes. You copy them to the new one and then authorize the computer. it’s pretty easy. If you can’t figure that out, maybe you really shouldn’t be using a laptop in the first place.
I got the extended warranty for my son’s iPod since he is a little rough on equipment. About 18 months after he got it the hard drive died (he swears he didn’t drop it!), took it into the Apple Store and he walked out with a replacement 15 minutes later. I have no complaints with that.
I personally had a misfortune of my laptop dying and then my nano locked up when I tried to get it working on a second machine which means that I lost my purchased tracks. Fortunately I only had a couple but it still annoyed the heck out of me. 99% of my music comes from my CD’s anyway but it iritates me that there was no way of downloading the tracks again if you had a catastrophic failure. This was before they put the backup feature into iTunes so I am glad they recognised the need.
I still like the nano though.
Back to the original question, here are the instructions for reseting/restoring the iPod http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
I like Apple…especially the stock price! ![]()
Can’t wait for the Apple phone!

You can always count on Uncle Phil to give you great advice. He’ll pull quarter from behind your ear if he’s in a really cheerful mood.
What I bought from Apple was the right to listen to a specific work. I wasn’t buying the means by which it was stored (I bought that prior to the music and it went kaput). If my laptop burns up in a fire or gets dropped and broken I should still have the right to listen to the music I purchased. No?

I liked it too until the early 90s

What kind of firearm did you take to the Apple store with you?
Yes, but it’s up to you to retain the proof that you purchased the right to listen to that music.

Itunes has a full history of my purchases. They can tell me what I bought, when, and which tie I was wearing that day. They only thing they can’t/won’t do, is let me reload my sweet sweet muziK. Isn’t Apple in trouble with the Beattles for using a trademark of theirs or something?
Yep, I’m convinced Apple is determined to make the same mistakes it made in the 80s. It is going to be so stubborn that all its customers get mad and migrate somewhere else.
I know what you mean about the non solid-state nature of the drive. I wasn’t running or biking when it happened. I was on the trainer and it was sitting next to me. I guess I need to restore it but even that isn’t working according to the prescribed directions on the web. My computer simply does not recognize the iPod at all. I don’t know how you would restore it if it’s permanently off?!?!?
No actually…Apple and the Beatles are working on a special edition iPod…they settled the dispute obviously…
If you by a CD and the CD gets damaged, you have to buy a new CD if you want to replace it unless you backed it up some other way.
If you buy a digital version of a song or a CD, if that gets damaged or lost…
That is when I bought!..excellent!..pretty cheap at around $8.00…pre gum drop iMac…

You probably bought my shares that I bought at $90 and sold at $8.00. For every loser in the stock market there is a winner.
