I currently have a 3S and my wife has a non smart phone.
Hers can be upgraded now, mine not until February.
Any thoughts on if we should upgrade to 4S or wait for the 5?

iPhone 5’s timing is pure rumor and it will be frustrating to keep chasing a rumor. I’d get the 4S. When the 5 comes out you might be bummed but you will always be bummed when the next version comes out regardless of when it is.
You could probably scoop a 4 (non-S) for really cheap right now…
Do what Khai said. You can get a 4 (non-S) for really cheap right now. I have the 4. With the software upgrade, the only thing you miss is Siri and the camera upgrade. IMO, those are not worth the extra money, which is why I did not “upgrade” to the 4s.
I am waiting for the 5. If the rumors are true, I will get it. But, if it is more like a 4.5s, I will not. Did the same with the iPad. The 2 is really just an iPad 1.5. I will wait for the next gen when they actually do something.
Love Apple, but, their “upgrades” have been bullshit (iPhone, iPad, iPod). Each next gen is really a half-step improvement. You need to go two gens to justify getting a new one.
To me, there is little that the 4 offers that the 3S does not. So, I’d prefer to get the 4S or perhaps wait unto another year and get the latest shiny whistle.

I found a dramatic difference b/t the 3s and the 4. To me, it felt like a huge upgrade. But, if you feel the 4 is not an upgrade from the 3s, then you will almost certainly feel the same about the 4s. You should wait for the 5.
I had the 3S and upgraded to the 4 recently. The only reason I wanted to upgrade was for the camera flash which can be used as a decent flashlight. Between the two phones, there isn’t anything that different. The pictures are a little better and the Iphone 4 does feel better built. The screen display is a bit more clear but the “death grip” on the bottom left does exist if you don’t have the rubber bumper on. The Siri thing on the 4S seems pretty quirky and is something that I would probably never use. All voice activated things never seem to work 100 percent of the time and it makes me laugh uncontrollably when I see someone talking to their phone over and over again because it’s not picking up what they’re saying.
Only real reason to upgrade for me is for the camera. I don’t feel anything offered on the 4S is enough for me to upgrade yet. Although being able to have a phone with 64GB of room would be excellent because I fill up my 16gb on my phone way too fast.
Is Siri what does the voice translation?
My buddy showed me his new Verizon Google Nexus. He turned on the text feature and hit hte microphone. I talked for 20 seconds and it put every single word in w/o so much as a hesitation or misspelled word. I was in total awe. Does the iPhone do this?
There are quite a few programs that allow this but I believe most are based on the Dragon technology(I’m not 100% certain). Last I read, they had the most accurate translation.
OP subject: I would wait for the 5, and it is only for one reason, 4G(and I don’t know if this has even been confirmed) but like the other poster said, get an iPhone 4 if you don’t intend to use much web browsing. Most people intend to use a phone for “a long time” but end up not so I wouldn’t sweat getting the iPhone 4. If you want one for a steal without having to sign a contract, I have a Verizon 16gb version that I’m about to send into Verizon for trade in credit.
In regards to the 4S, I would skip it completely. It’s like a half-assed effort of an upgrade. Seemed more like a need to put something out on schedule rather than a true upgrade from the 4.
I would wait. I primarily use apple stuff (iPod, iPad, MacBook pro, apple tv) but I think right now apple is now getting behind the curve on phones. Right now I think the Samsung galaxy 2s is probably a slightly better phone that the new iPhone. Hopefully the next iPhone will put them over the edge.
Bringing this thread back from the past!
I’m well overdue for an upgrade with verizon and my current blackberry curve’s battery can barely hold a charge. My options are, free iphone 4 with 2 year signing, get a new $35 battery for my bb, $50 iphone 4S or go big and a iphone 5 for $150.
Is the 5 that much better then the 4S?
Just for the record: I’m not a big apple fanboy, just my wife and buddies have them so it would be cheaper on text messages.
I’m not the type to get the newest thing out there, but I’d go for the 5. The battery life seems much better on my girlfriends 5 than my 4s. both do basically the same thing, with the excpetion the 5 is on the lte network. The only down side to the 5 is if you already have chargers for other iphones it won’t fit and you have to get new ones

That is what I freakn hate about apple, can’t just use a universal charger like everyone else…gotta buy the icharger or whatever. Good to know that, thanks.

In apple’s defense. they’ve been using the same damn ubiquitous charger plug for their ipods and iphones for 50 years (in tech years). I’d give them a break on this one. Their new plug, while pricey, is tiny, slick, fast, easy and it doesn’t matter which side is ‘up’ when you plug it in. cool.
have you seen the posts on youtube that compare the galaxy s3 vs. apple 5? You might want to hold off on the 5 and get the galaxy.
Just saying.
I have a 4s, Ill get the 5 on monday when Im in Beijing.

Everyone else is using USB and Apple develops thunderbolt. Everyone else is using mp3 and Apple develops iTunes and iPod. Everyone else is using a keyboard on a phone and Apple develops iPhone. Everyone else is using a laptop and Apple develops iPad.
And you want them to suddenly be like everyone else?
Also- in my opinion, the new lightning plug is the coolest plug I’ve ever seen on a mobile device. Funny how Samsung looks like the old style Apple plug. Samsung needs some originality.
