Iowa Triathletes?

Only for passing through, really.

I’m from eastern IA.

Alas, the majority of triathletes are in Des Moines, Ames, Iowa City and Cedar Rapids with a few from the Quad-Cities (my former home). Might be a few down in Omaha, too.

So no, I’m of no help. Best of luck.
Hey! I’m form the QC too. Where from?

ps, whats wrong with N/S and E/W roads. Ride a hour turn left, ride a hour turn left. ride a hour turn left , ride a hour you are home.

When you are used to riding in the driftless areas of SW Wisconsin, the answer to “what’s wrong…” is EVERYTHING. I’d almost rather be on a trainer than riding flat checkerboards with the semi’s and farm trucks. It’s all a matter of opinion.

Job moved us to Omaha in late November from the Denver area. I went out and bought a trainer a week after we arrived mostly due to the wind and cold mix. I can handle cold, but a 20 mph wind in cold air is where I draw the line. Two questions, as it warms up do I need to be concerned about safety on the rural roads west of the city if on a solo ride or do folks around the area pay attention to bikers? It isn’t a shot at Nebraska, I grew up in Eastern SD and most of my relatives still don’t understand or show any interest. Most think biking shold be done on a trail 1 mile at a time in jean shorts on a 3 speed Huffy. Also, is there any open water swimming areas around that can be used on a regular basis?

Welcome to Iowa…
We have a healthy triathlon community across the state…(and Minnesota as Grant mentioned).

Here are the two main tri series

Let me know if you plan on doing either one of the Pigman races…I’d be glad to help with a homestay

Don’t listen to this guy he sounds all sweet an innocent until he comes sprinting by you on the run, asking why you are going so slow. Haha

Hey Grant, are you going to come up and do the new Bluff Creek Tri (Olympic) at the end of May. Flat bike except for the longish hill on the back side of Boone and the 13% grade side of pilot mound. Alex is running a deal through the end of January that gets you entry to both both Bluff Creek and Hickory Grove for $100.00

I’d contact the local swim coach and ask for direct help. Tell her/him what you are after. I know you are a great runner. You Are going to improve on the bike this summer  So, I’d focus on networking for swim help either from the coach, or someone they know?

Yeah i am, i signed up for them once i saw the email. Im doing a sprint like every weekend haha.

Sadly i wish hy-vee would make a real bike course this year and i would think about doing that. But it looks like they are going to keep the b.s. course they have right now. I’m glad im not the only one that feels that way they only have 313 people signed up, with the last email i recieved.

Do you have an idea when cyman is going to be? Still at big creek? I have to say i can’t complain about the racing options. I think i could do a race everyweekend during the summer without leaving iowa.

Hi, and welcome to Omaha. I have lived here all my life and trained in the area for past 25 years. But I live about 30 miles south of downtown and ride the rural roads in that area. People are friendly and give me plenty or room for the most part. We do have a lot of big rock trucks in the area do to the rock quarries. I have been stopped before more than once by an old farmer in a pickup truck to check to see if I was OK. ( They just can’t figure out why anybody would be riding a bicycle out in the middle of nowhere in their underwear). The roads west of town might have more of the suburban culture where everybody is in a hurry to get nowhere, but I have never rode in that area. I do sometimes ride on the bike trail and use the section around Bellevue witch gives you a very good flat uninterrupted bike ride with no traffic. Seam no matter where or when I ride there is wind. I open water swim in Beaver Lake witch is down by me and is a private lake with lots of boat traffic so I go at sunrise. I sure there should be something in west Omaha, sorry I am not much help there. There is a master swim team that swims very early in the am in Elkhorn at the Commons building. You have probably noticed it is slim pickens for races in the area, just a couple of local sprints. But like this thread says there is some good stuff over in Iowa going on. Good luck with your training.

I know whaletown tri in august is less then an hour from you guys i believe. Thats a fun course. pain in the ass but a fun course.

Thanks, I did that race back in the 90’s a couple of times, Great race and coarse, just seem to be missing it latlely for some reason or another. Maybe this year.

Thanks, Omaha is a pretty nice city. I like the size, big enough to have what you need small enough that I can get where I need to go without spending 1 hr minimum on the road. I have scouted some bike routes west of the city that look pretty good. Most have a decent shoulder and contrary to what most may think, Nebraska is not flat. I’m looking forward to the riding. Living in Colorado you had to head out to the eastern plains to get some long (non-climbing) routes. Here I can head out my front door and be on a long 50 mile stretch of rolling highway in 10 minutes.
