He’s doing Kona this year purely for the experience and to learn. He will race as hard as he can, but has no expectations. He said he might as well do it rather than watch it.
He starts his Kona build after the 70.3 worlds
He did no special prep for IM Cork
He enjoyed the bike and most of the run
His main focus in Cork was getting nutrition in and riding / running within himself.
Regarding the pace line at the 70.3 worlds - he was surprised just how much you save in the pace line, and couldn’t create a gap. He didn’t complain, though. He said a race is a race - you take what comes and do your best. I liked this a lot.
Of course when it comes to Kona, if he doesn’t win, he’ll be smashed to pieces on here. He seems to have his head screwed on and be fairly humble about the whole thing.
Good takeaways. I enjoyed the interview and I’m not really an Ali fan. I think I just saw that he’s on the zwift tri podcast that just got posted as well. Looks like he’s doing some intentional PR work.
