International Flights/Bike Costs

I know this is an ongoing question, but I am flying from Philly to Mexico City next month and am taking a bike. Does anyone know which flights to take or not to. I’m trying to get the best deal to send my bike (which costs more than the ticket!)

I believe that US Air, American Airlines, Continental, and Delta are my main options.

Mexicana?

I am pretty sure I am using that to IM Cozumel and their bike costs are $65/each way.

Alaska Air flies to Mexico. I believe they only charge either the overweight (50+lbs) or the oversized fee, not both.

I shouldn’t be saying this as many of my friends work for Delta. Please look at the cost of each airline before you go. This last trip I paid more for my bike to fly (and don’t think about shipping anything, it won’t get there!). Delta: Flight 450, bike 600. Delta now charges 300 each way INTL if you are under 50lbs. That is a hard number to reach if you place your shoes/helmet/bike pump and tent in there. I have found if you are nice (as you should always be anyway) to the counter taker typically they won’t weigh the box, and if they do if you are really close they will usually let it slide. Never used to be a big deal until they came down on the weight.

Have a great trip!

I lived in St. Croix and went to Cancun with AA - $100-$150 each way for the bike (it really depends on how charming you are, and how much willing the desk attendant is). International flights…are SOMETIMES free…if you can convince them to treat it as a second checked bag. The heaviest I travel is 1 duffel, bike box, and De Soto travel bag as a carry on (not overly filled) Also, Mexicana is a oneworld alliance partner of AA…so I’d think they charge similar prices…or if you book with AA you might end up on a Mexicana jet.

Hope that helps a bit.
