Interloc Racing Design 11-28 9 speed cassette!

Any body use this brand. How well did it work with Unltegra 9 speed derailer? Thinking about getting one, if I can find one! Every place I looked, they are out of stock!
Refferred to past post, but not much info!

Thanks,
G

Why would you get that type of cassette, the spacing between the gears will be very big at times. If you struggle on the hills and need an easier gearing ratio on the low end I would go with compacts and a casette that doesn’t have many jumps, e.g. 12-21, 11-23, 12-23, etc.

Why the need to have a range of 11 - 28?

No experience with that brand - but I recently purchased an SRAM 9sp. cassette with 11-27 (I’m 99% sure) from my LBS and run an Ultegra RD. Been out for a few rides with it and it works great (used all 18 gears yesterday in a ride, seamless shifting).

I live in the Adirondacks, so the gearing really comes in handy. However, I originally bought it for the Black Fly Tri - where I will need to be going about 60mph downhill for half, then coming back up the mountain for the other half. He still probably has another laying around if you want me to check - I paid short money for it.

Call me crazy but it seems like anytime you need a 28, you also need an 11

given that there will be a FAAAAST downhill on the other side of the SLOOOW uphill.

Whereas a flat course you might only need a 12-23 in case of some wind…

not much of a jump.
Ult: 12-27 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-27
IRD: 11-28 11-12-14-16-18-20-22-25-28

Want it more for the 11. No probs with hills. Do tend to spin out on that 12 though. Tried the SRAM 11-27, not working very well for me, and its heavier.

PS…compacts are for girls!

Tried that SRAM, no luck with it,doesnt shift as well. A few buddies use the sram as well, have a 50% success rate. Works fine for some and not so for others…

Thanks!~

going from 14-16-18 is HUGE jump right there. I’m a very fine tuned machine and I hate not being able to ride at my preferred cadence. With a 55 in the front I could never miss the 13 the 15 AND the 17 in that range. 55 aside, I wouldn’t want it with a 53 either.

Compacts aren’t for girls. It’s all about gear ratio and you might want to do some calculations first.

but then i learned to ride on a 9 speed and as such I can’t even FEEL the jumps on a 10 speed setup…haha
.

I’d use an 11-28 for really steep hills and with a compact. The IRD 9sp shifted fine with Shimano. My understanding is that the 10sp is not as good.

IRD’s advantage is that they provide more 2 tooth changes, so you get more usable gears. Here’s a 12-x breakdown:

Shimano 12x25 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25
Shimano 12x27 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 27 – only the last two cogs are different than a 12-25
IRD 12-28 12, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 28

With the IRD, you loose the 14, but gain the 28 when compared to the Simano 12x25. Compared to the 12-27, you lose the 14, but have 23, 25, 28; so only one 3 tooth jump and 4 usable cogs from 21 on.

Same problems with the new shimano x-28. They just replaced the 27 with a 28, so now there’s a 4 tooth jump.

I have checked out that new shimano dura ace 11-28…it looks sweet, but for 300 bones,i will pass! and its a 10 speed. I am looking for a 9 speed for the road bike!

ok,

53x11=4.818
53x12=4.417

50x11=4.5454

So the 50x11 is actually a bigger gear than 53x12.

Let’s look at your easier gears with that jumpy cassette:

39x23=1.6957
39x25=1.56
39x26=1.5
39x27=1.444
39x28=1.393

34x21=1.6190
34/23=1.4783
34/25=1.36
34/26=1.3077

I just did that quickly and didn’t pay attention much to rounding, so there might be an error in the last digit but I gotta get going. So by looking at those numbers, why wouldn’t you run compacts 50/34 with an 11/23 or 11/25 casette? Not only would your biggest gear be bigger (50x11 vs. 53x12) but your easiest gear would also be smaller (34x25 vs 39x28). On top of that your gears all all closer together and you have lesser jumps in between gears.

I’m not riding compacts because I don’t need them but you just convinced me that those are for girls :wink:

Because I was looking for a cheaper alternative to get the 11. The 28 might be an added bonus (maybe) for where I do most of my riding out in east county San Diego! Thanks for your input on the science of gearing, but, I was just asking if any body is familiar with this brand and how they work with ultegra.
