Interesting that God is mentioned so much in the Inauguration

Religiosity…Is that like Truthiness?

Religiosity…Is that like Truthiness?

No, those two things are inversely correlated in fact

oooooooooooo

.

the USA is definitely an outlier as far as how religious we are compared to other developed nations

That was an interesting graph and it confirmed a few things for me, anyways. I had brought this up during the campaign - in no other western democracy, is politics so closely linked with the christian church. I know that in Canada, politicians go to great lengths to actually distance themselves from any religion - Christianity in particular. And it is the same in much of western Europe and elsewhere.

Hence back to the OP’s query - I would agree. At times the Inauguration Ceremony felt like a Church service.

Interesting that the piece of music that Aretha Franklin sang had as its base melody the same melody as God Save the Queen!!

In classic Obama style, he made very clear that those of other religions (and non-believers) are as much a part of this country as any. He did make obvious the HE is a Christian.

I was waiting to see if we’d be included. I was hoping he’d have the balls to say “atheist,” but he did not. Probably a wise choice on his part. That word scares the shit out of a lot of folks (not including regular ST posters. I know you guys more or less know what an atheist is).

I’m having a hard time putting Clinton into the “God Fearing” category

If ever there were a president who should fear God…

The concept of separation of church and state in the US is quite regularly misunderstood. The concept was and is to keep the government from interfering with the church (or religion in general). Remember, a majority of the immigrants to the “America” has been the subjects of religious persecution who were not free to practice their chosen religion. The concept did not prohibit for example the posting of the 10 commandments from a courhouse wall or “in god we trust” from the currency. The US was formed under the social and moral guidlines of a Judeo/Christian society.

It was to keep goverment out of the church and allow people to worship freely, or, not worhsip at all should they desire.

Seems backwards doesn’t it

.

Not just that, but the state also puts limits on how people can worship and conduct their religion, as well as, defines what a religion is.

Really? You think if God had to order all the presidents by evilness he would put clinton first among them all?

What would that say about God?

If ever there were a president who should fear God…

Of course not. But I doubt Bill’s looking forward to that whole let’s-review-that-highlight-reel-o-sins part of judgment. The cigar episode might be a little uncomfortable.

Yeah but something like 75% of men are guilty of that sin =)

hell is crowded man

slavery worked too
lots of bullshit works

Maybe it’s just me but everytime God is mentioned, some people seem to get so angry.

Let it go man.

**I really don’t see what the big deal is it has worked for 200+ years.Worked for my grandfather, father,me and my son. **

Common sense like this doesn’t work with those who get so angry everytime God is mentioned.

I think they need God in their lives.

The cigar thing? Really?

Huh. Well, that would explain… ah, never mind.

I’m just trying to deflect attention from the Inauguration. I’m bored of the wall to wall coverage.

Uh, maybe you might want to visit the Jefferson Memorial to see what he really had to say about it.

defend the constitution… and “so help me God.”

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm)…” then eliminate the god bit. Luckily, you can opt out of the religionist stuff when you swear in.

Nothing about any gods for me and lots of others- it’s a big deal b/c we’re not going to bow down to mythology.

I noticed that too and was quite pleased.

Seperation of church and state does not prohibit a politician from being religious or making religious references.

It does prohibit the establishment of and/or the prohibition of religions.

We elected a man of faith as the POTUS, it would seem obviious that he would choose to make references to his religion.
