Here’s a link to a typical diet for a small family in a number of countries. The big difference I notice is the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables in the non-American families. The shot with the 2 pizzas is funny.
The Sicilian has a hot wife!
Lol… what a great comparison! I am not surprised by the “average American Diet” at all! gross.
Only two pizzas per week? What is wrong with them?!
The German family likes their alcohol, the Americans like the processed food and the Mexicans like their coke. Also interesting that most pictures contain Coke.
Amazing how little the family in Chad consumes. I’ve eaten more at a breakfast buffet…![]()
Damn…how many liter bottles of Coke are on the table for the Mexican family? 12? For one week? Wow.
Also, the…errr…orderliness of the German family layout sure plays into stereotypes, huh? They’ve also got quite a few bottles of wine and beer for a single week =:-0
That figures, I eat like a German, must be genetic of something. (Germans and genetics, I’m not going there ![]()
Actually the pictures don’t surprise me much at all. I eat at several friends houses throughout the month and I always find it a bit odd that they don’t eat like I ate when I was growing up. We always had one meat, one or two vegatables, and fruit at most meal.
MMMM pizza. Actually, I’m surprised to see that I would like to eat with the Egyptians, that’s a nice spread of food they have going there.
wow! great post, casey. A friend recently emailed me a audio clip of some guy who left a complaint on the voice mail of one of the big sausage companies. He was bitchin’ because the 16 oz tube of breakfast sausage wasn’t enough for a meal for a family of four, two of which were over 300 lbs, even incuding the steak and eggs. can’t imagine what that guys arteries are like.
Here’s my contribution:

I heard the same clip on the radio. Very funny!

She’s not on the menu…
These pictures are from a book called “Hungry Planet: What the world eats”.

It’s a fascinating book that talks about how each of these families buys their food and talks about some of the larger socioeconomic and health issues surrounding food in general. Great reading.
I’ve been saying for many years now that if the rest of the world was to adopt the “typical” American diet, it would bring about the downfall of civilization.
If everybody ate as much meat for example we’d have to cut down all the rain forests and substitute vegetable and fruit growing areas to make way for cattle grazing lands.
Interesting. Those Germans must shop at expensive stores because when I lived there I paid less than 50% for food compared to what I spend in the states. Many fruits and vegies were 1/3 what they cost here. Definitely no where near 350 euros per week.
those Germans know how to eat and drink!
