So the other day, I went for a run for the first time in forever (in non-running shoes, it was a bad idea I know). Obviously I had a fair amount of aching, but the worst part was a strain in my inner-groin on my left leg. I rode through it the next couple days anyways, as it wasn’t that bad when riding. I then took two days off the bike, and everything started feeling a bit better. But then yesterday I rode again, and now have gotten pretty painful ITBS on that same leg. And of course, today it was even worse. I’m 99% sure that it’s due to the running not the bike, as my position hasn’t changed recently, but I am concerned that it’s gotten worse.
I guess my question is, did I just irritate the ITB while running, and cycling just made it worse? Or does the fact that it got worse while cycling mean that maybe there was something wrong with my fit that has become more prominent now?
You’ve most likely got some kind of knot or adhesion that needs to be worked out. If you don’t already own a trigger point book, it’s a good investment. My it-band flares up when my upper quads are really tight.
I used my non fitted roadie on the trainer and fitted tri bike outside. I found after riding the trainer exclusively for a few weeks, I had aggravated my IT band. I since had the roadie fitted and no problems since. Best of luck.
So yesterday my afternoon commute was really, really painful, so I took today off, and am stretching/rolling/icing it a lot. It’s feeling a lot better.
We’ll see how it feels riding tomorrow!
Take it from someone who has experienced something very similar, go see a Chiropractor that specializes in the Graston Technique as quickly as possible. Rest will not help, breaking down the scar tissue will most likely fix your problem. I’ve wasted many weeks of rest and painful training by not getting treatment quickly enough. From my experience with ITBS I wasted 2 months trying different things. My doctor sent me to a Chiropractor who specializes in Graston. I was able to run almost immediately after the torture session and I was pain free within 2 weeks.
