Interesting article on Iraq and the Iraqi Police

Unlike other recently posted articles this one is not the opinion of an individual rather the culmination of a lot of work by an independednt Commision charged with reviewing the Iraqi Interior Ministry and Police.

Their conclusions…Iraq’s Interior Ministry is regarded as “dysfunctional” and sectarian" and the National Police should be “disbanded and reorganized,”

This is probably one of those non-benchmark benchmarks.

Again?

Even if this article is based on research, rather than opinion by someone who wants to get promoted up a rank, the fact of the matter is that the right will claim that CNN is left leaning, and therefore the article can’t be trusted.

Why is that interesting? The police are and always have been a continuing disaster. Nothing new there.

“rather than opinion by someone who wants to get promoted up a rank,”

Do you really have such a low opinion of the military that you think guys get promoted based on blog articles they write? Keep in mind that the article in the other thread was written by an Australian.

Why is that interesting? The police are and always have been a continuing disaster. Nothing new there.
Its such a non-story its the lead on CNN, Yahoo, MSNBC, CSPAN, etc etc etc.

I was asking why you thought it was interesting? It is not like there is anything new or anything disputed here.

Chat with your favorite soldier back from deployment. The Iraqi police suck. Major, major problem.

I am not sure which is funnier, the idea that MattinSF would talk to a soldier or the idea that he is conversant with enough soldiers to call one a favorite.

was that really necessary? did it make you feel better somehow?

Probably not necessary, but it *was *funny.

Hey, at least she didn’t compare you to Chuck Schumer.

Truth hurts.

Funny?

it was cheap, sophmoric, and decidedly unfunny. Its always an assinine comment like that that turns an otherwise productive discussion into a mud slinging contest. You should know better Vitus because you’ve been complaining about similar behavior elsewhere.

Sheesh. I don’t really think the behavior I complained about was similar. But if you think it was, better brace yourself, because the response I got to my complaints was more of the same.

I don’t have a low opinion of people in the military at all. But if an officer writes a report on the situation in Iraq, do you really think he will have many negative comments on the situation and our involvement? More than likely, the document has been edited and reviewed by military communications staff, and no career soldier is going to risk their career over a document. So the natural result will be an opinion that is skewed towards the positive.

Sauce for the goose Vitus.

CLD’s post lacked any substance, added nothing to the discussion, and was nothing but a cheap personal attack which I found personally offensive. If you think thats acceptable behavior thats fine by me, but I don’t want to hear you complain again about anything said on this forum about you.

" But if an officer writes a report on the situation in Iraq, do you really think he will have many negative comments on the situation and our involvement?"

Why not?

"More than likely, the document has been edited and reviewed by military communications staff, and no career soldier is going to risk their career over a document. "

First of all, the article was a blog entry. It didn’t go through any military communications staff. Secondly, the article was written by an Australian Reserve LT Colonel, not an American. Third, David Kilcullen is an internationally recognized expert in the subject area, not some ambitious career minded officer looking for a promotion.

You really need to do just a modicum of research before you decide you know the motivation behind an article you disagree with. If you still disagree with him, fine, but don’t attribute the article to motivations that you pulled out of your ass.

Sigh. Maybe you should take it up with CLD. I personally don’t consider what she said about you as offensive as many of the comments that have been directed at me and Art, but we can agree to disagree on that, I guess. I suspect though, that I could change your mind rather quickly simply by actually insulting you in the manner insults were directed at me. It wouldn’t take long, I think, before the accusation that you don’t know any soldiers would seem pretty mild.

Besides, it’s not like she compared you to Schumer, right?

David Kilcullen is a political appointee working for the State Department. Condoleeza Rice signs his paycheck, so please stop pretending that he is some sort of independent expert.

Ouch. Nice research.

Well without knowing me, my family, my circle of friends and who I may or may not know in the military or who I may or may not be friends with who came back from Iraq missing a limb, I suggest CLD not make such moronic comments in the future.
