Have to say that with the benefit of hindsight (the article was written in 2004), the “witch-hunt” is looking pretty justified. All the circumstantial evidence about Lance Armstrong was actually true. Gaumont’s allegations about other Cofidis riders doping and the fact that “everybody is doing it” has also been substantially confirmed. Press speculation and exaggeration is certainly an issue but it’s hardly confined to coverage of doping in sport, and there are plenty of laws in place to protect the rights of those being written about - e.g. Lance Armstrong successfully sued the Sunday Times for printing allegations that he claimed they couldn’t justify. Of course, they’re in the process of suing him to get their money back now…
