Interbike moving to Reno-Tahoe

when i began as a manufacturer the show was held in Reno (this, in the mid-80s). best venue that show ever had. now it’s going back. bravo.

Yesss!!! If anyone plans on going, Northstar is fantastic. It’s really fun to ride.

Jeff Pearson is a really good open water swim coach and does early morning sessions at Kings Beach (close to Northstar) on the weekends. I bet he could be persuaded to do daily swim workouts during Interbike. He sets up buoys and works on skills with a group. He also does really good underwater swim stroke analysis during those sessions for an extra cost.

There’s tons of great road riding in the area and you could leave from Northstar or your Reno hotel.

If you have any questions about the area let me know!

Dan,

You pre-date me! I recall a couple of years in Anaheim, at the Anaheim Convention Center, then on to Las Vegas - a “threatened” move away from LV several years ago, and then a reconsideration and it stayed in LV, now this move to Reno looks definitive.

I’ve always thought Interbike and Las Vegas a bit in-congruent. A bike and cycling trade show, in a city that celebrates sloth & sin!

Yes there are advantages to LV - great flight connections at low prices, from anywhere in North America and plentiful and reasonably priced hotel accommodations.

I also note that while Las Vegas might be not my or your kind of place, I know for many people in North America and beyond, it’s a BIG attraction*. Back when shops did more of this sort of thing, and they would often take the whole or select members of the staff as a bonus for a good year, many of these employees were over-the-moon for the chance to go to Las Vegas.

Reno, while also a casino town, seems more in-tune with the vibe of cycling and outdoor sports and recreation than Las Vegas. There was some decent road and MTB riding near LV - but it was WAY out of the city! I’ve not been to Reno in a number of years, but it seemed more immediate and close when I was there.

  • When I tell average folk on our street that I am going to Las Vegas or just come back, they go on and on and on about what a great place it is, or if they have never been, It’s at the top of their must-go-places list!

I also note that while Las Vegas might be not my or your kind of place …

A few years ago I had lunch with a senior executive from the MGM Resorts. As we were casually chatting, I asked her what she would recommend to someone visiting Vegas who had no interest in gaming, shows, dinners, golf, and shopping*. She thought about it for a bit and said simply, leave.

  • Pretty much describes me but end up in Vegas every year or so for an industry conference. Going again this year the weekend of Kona. Ugh.

i did all my training in reno for the 81 ironman. it’s a great endurance sports town. i put on my first triathlon in reno, in 81, and my second in 82, in a place that i think would be great for a gravel tri. i’m looking at the “course” now on google earth.

Washoe Lake is now full. Some gravel/dirt roads to the east and south of the lake. Run along the lake shore.

The “swim” leg should be a stand-up paddle board race…and a “trail run” leg, of course

Hi Dan,

Take a look at swimming at boca/stampede then hitting the Emigrant trail to the gravel roads through Dog Valley heading north to Crystal Peak and Cold Springs. We are gravel riding that route from Waldens/Eclipse Pizza Saturday at 630 am if you want to cruise up and ride. Always welcome here and free pizza and beer.

gravel tri.

Tell me more. Is this a thing now?
I mapped out a brilliant gravel tri course over 5 years ago, but never thought anyone would show up.
Bike/tire selection would be interesting.

LOL

I’m the same. I tell people ( average folk) my routine when I am in Las Vegas, and they are kind of shocked. For the typically two nights, I am in Las Vegas for Interbike I am often in bed and asleep by 10am!

I have not spent a dime on gambling, a show or shopping there in, well . . forever!

Knowing what I know about Reno, I might be tempted to bring my road bike and spend a few extra days in the area riding after Interbike.

Thanks for that! I was planning on going this year for giggles (and maybe to show off a project I’m working on with Plane Frameworks  and an OWS every morning would be nice.

that is precisely where i am looking. i put on a race on boca reservoir in 1982. we rode the out and back to the end of the road at stampede, and then we ran on dog valley road (toward prosser as i recall). my thought is to do the RIDE out that road that we ran on. there’s a splitload of gravel out there to ride.

Same here. One year I answered question during a conference session and the speaker tossed me a $10 chip for participating. Three and a half days later I still had it. Left it on the night stand for the cleaning staff when I checked out.

That’s what these guys are doing. High alpine lake, surrounded by mountains, and sweet trails. Just a slightly different location, and not IM distance.

AWESOME!

I hear you were in Reno recently  Did you make it up into the hills?

i haven’t come yet. i took sick. have slightly postponed.

Industry/Trade reaction seems to be favourable - http://www.bicycleretailer.com/north-america/2017/08/03/what-does-industry-think-about-interbikes-move-reno#.WYR3kITyv3g

Although there are some mixed feelings.

I agree with the commentators who said, this will still not bring back some of the bigger (Trek etc . .) and even middle (Cervelo . .) bike brand players. They have adopted a different strategy with the dealers and dealer relationships and the move to Reno does not address the timing issue either.

That being said, I know Las Vegas was a VERY costly place for an exhibitor and for those mid to large bike brands, who would make use of much larger and more elaborate booths, who I know did complain of the cost of Las Vegas (both the Sands and Mandalay), perhaps the lower costs of Reno will attract them back.

perhaps the lower costs of Reno will attract them back.

they’ll get back some mid level players, because it’s cheaper to exhibit. not the large players. the show is going to be smaller now, that’s just the way of it. at least they’re in a town, in a convention center, that is the proper size of the show.

you’re going to be hearing another industry gathering announcement soon

Yes - I heard complaints from some of the mid-sized bike companies that it was too expensive in Las Vegas at first the Sands and then Mandalay Bay. For overall less money they can fly a bunch of their dealers to their location or some other place, and do it that way.

Looking forward to this announcement!
