Installing wired PowerTap on a Transition

Before I waste a bunch of time, any tips on installing a wired PT SL on a Specialized Transition? The manal says to install the shark fin within 3 inches of the axle which looks like it might be tricky with the way the stays flair out as they come together. Also, does the knobby part of the shark fin have to be on the inside? A quick look at the possible positions looks like it might fit best under the chain stay which keeps the knob away from the spokes.

The knob does face in. I would think the fin might get beat up if it was under the chainstay. I just took my time and routed everything carefully and securely. Do the best you can to protect those wires as that harness can fail (I cover the wires in tape). If possible, move your display away from sweat runoff as much as possible as mine failed doing hill repeats (no airflow during hill repeats to carry sweat away from the computer). If I had to do it all over, I would have bought the wireless PT on a training wheel and bought a wheel cover for racing and I would have saved a lot of money in the end, but I still love my PT. You will love it too. Hope this helps.

How far from the hub were you able to mount the receiver? If I mount mine as far down the seat stay as possible, ie the lower zip tie will be right where the stay veers out, the tip of the receiver is almost 3 inches from the axle. Have you had any issues with receiving the signal from the hub? The manual clearly states 3 inches max, but on the bottoom of the page there is a compatability chart that say 1-3 okay, 5 is not, 7 is okay again. I’m guessing the 7 info is a typo, but my wheel is at the deaer being redished, so I can’t play around with it to verify. If I can move the receiver up to 7 inches away from the hub, that would make a huge difference in dealing with the spoke clearance, etc.

I had never considered mounting the shark fin on the seat stay. It looks like it would work but the wires would be routed across the top tube which is not a real problem except that the wires show a little more.

On my P2 and R3 I was able to mount the receiver very close to the hub on the chain stay so I have never had a problem with reception.

You might try simply flaring out the receiver if you are having spoke clearance problems.

Hope this helps.
