Inspirational Story: High School Basketball and Missed Freethrows

Here is a very moving story about a true act of sportsmanship.

It would have been great to be a part of this either as a player or participant. Hats off to the young man who “shot” the freethrows.

It got a little “dusty” in my car when I heard about this story this morning.

I can’t imagine any team actually shooting free throws in a situation like this
.

thats cool, it WAS the right thing to do.

but i hope that guy did not refrain from posterizing the kid during the game if that was the best way to score later =)

Heard it on Mike & Mike. That is what sports are all about. Kuddos to those kids. Gives one hope in the wake of the A-Fraud media blitz.

I wonder if efernand will respond to this thread. The guy who missed two free throw clearly didn’t try his best.

“Pathetic. I thought everyone was supposed to try their best, no matter what the score is.”

Good display of sportsmanship on that court.

Different situation. The free throws being awarded here were not honorable, so an honorable competitor can not make use of them.

Just as an honorable competitor would not fake-play basketball to disgrace his opponents.

all of it seems a bit self serving to me.

My mom dies I am not playing in a basketball game that night.

The kid missing the free throws knew damn well he would get accolades for doing so.

Why was this the “right” thing to do? The right thing is to stay at your ass home your mom just died.

Thats two different choices being made by two different people.

For the guy shooting the free throws, the right thing to do was miss, because they were not rightfully earned points.

For the guy who had to choose whether to stay home or play, the right thing to do is entirely personal and depends on his family. His mother might have wanted him to play, who the fuck are you to tell hiim what is right?

Are you jesus?

I am ready to follow you!

Why was this the “right” thing to do? The right thing is to stay at your ass home your mom just died.

The RULES state that the team earns the tech foul shots cause the The player was not in the playbook for that nights game. So yes the team DID earn the right to shoot the tech foul shots cause the other team didn’t follow the fucking rules.

His mom doesn’t give a rats ass if the kid plays or not. She is DEAD. Putting yourself ahead of your team is self serving. I really don’t give a shit if the kids plays or not. I I just don’t see how this story isn’t self serving and I don’t get all teary eyed over some bullshit like this.

So on the one hand you feel that a team that is winning 58 to nothing against a school of 20 learning diabled girls should not call off the press because they would be “faking” it and thus “insulting the other team” (but only in the eyes of yourself and efernand since everyone else seemed to agree that running up the score is insulting).

Yet here there is a clearly defined rule called out in the rule book that states that if your player is not in the roster that the other team gets to shoot two foul shots for the breakage of teh rule, and you think these are not “rightfuly earned points”???

Are the points ever rightfuly earned? At what point is it right to accept technical foul shots and to refuse techincal foul shots, in your opinion?

She is DEAD. Putting yourself ahead of your team is self serving.

I’m confused by this statement. He went to the game to play. How is that putting himself ahead of his team? If anything, this is putting himself ahead of his family (since the mother is dead, she won’t care, but the survivors might.).
