This is an inspiring story… I went to Hawaii to watch the race and get inspired by all these amazing stories… This one is right here, in my town. My friend Kate signed up for lake placid last year. her first Ironman. She got hit by a car in the fall and broke a back. It was BAD. She survived and 2 back surgeries later, and still in rehab, she bought a new bike… Last week-end was her first time back on the road. She is scared to ride with reason. But her determination and courage to get back out there is inspiring. I know in the back of her head she still wants to do an Ironman.
Well my friend has started posting on slowtwitch. She is greydog… She is a bit timid and I hope she posts some more and get the support I have been getting from all you fantastic people… well if you have a chance, spread the words of encouragements for Kate to get back in the sport after a near death experience on the bike. I know she needs help with her new bike position
sniff sniff…wiping away a big tear…
thanks Marisol…
Welcome. There are a bunch of us from Cincy here. I assume you’re a fellow doggie lover … lots and lots of those here too.
Lance Armstrong broke his back… Now look at him… Tour d’Avenir, here you come…
awesome! nice to you, and hopefully all of us Cincinnatians can meet up sometime and go for a casual ride, or check out the crits.
anyways, you’re a champ! keep the faith, babe.
Congrats on getting through the rehab and getting back on the bike. I got hit by a car about 6 weeks ago which killed my collegiate season and my spot to race at collegiate nationals but I just got back on the bike and have been running about a week longer.
I think I got a lot luckier than you did because my rehab was only 3 weeks long and i’m doing my first duathlon next week so i’m racing already but I must say that crossing the street and riding on roads with traffic make me a pretty nervous. It gets better trust me.
Just think about how lucky you are to be alive and that there are so many more out there who can either never ride/walk again or worse. GOOD LUCK!!
Congratulations on getting back on the road. I know that it can be difficult after being hit by a car, I have been hit twice myself. I have found though that it has made me more responsible in picking the routes I ride as well as the time of day.
Good luck with your back. Definitley ease back into your training and listen to your body. Do you do much for “core strengthening”?
Ultimately greydog, our capacity as a human being during our life is determined by our ability to resolve adversity.
With this as a yardstick, your capacity is extraordinary.
People can muster the resolve to rise to “discretionary challenges” all the time: Ironman, a business, a job… a *choice *we make willfully to challenge ourselves. And those accomplishments are commendable.
But the challenges and adversity assigned to us by the random, ruthless turn of happenstance are the ones that truly test our soul and character.
Larger than any Ironman, you have risen up those challeneges in facing them with resolve.
The enormity of that cannot be overstated. As a species, it is our greatest attribute.
Best wishes and lean on us frequently, as the inspiration from your fortitude shores our efforts as well.
I have 2 words for you greydog: Indomitable Spirit.
Welcome to the tribe Greydog.
You’ll be stronger this time around…i’m wishing good kharma your way.

I know when I broke my collar bone in a MTB race, it took me over two years of biike racing to where I could be in a pack with people on both sides of me. But I did get over it. You will too. It does get better.
Welcome to the tribe.
Hey Kate, I’ve heard a lot about you! From what I’ve heard you’re tough, pretty soon you’ll be back to your former level. Hang in there!
Kate,
Welcome back to riding!! If you are a friend of Marisol’s, then you are a friend of mine. I need to come out there and ride and have you, Marisol and trigoneroadie kick my ass!! It doesn’t hurt as bad when it is kicked by three good looking ladies!!!
Kate–
I’m glad to hear you have recovered enough to ride again. You, me and Mitch Gold could start up “Team Spinal.”
Take care,
Brian
I broke my back…C1 - C2 - C7…and a few other bones with it…I am back baby…if your back hurts, get a Softride and back on the saddle!
Welcome greydog! Hope you stick around. We need more chicks around here!! Congrats on getting back out there. I can only imagine how tough it is. One day at a time…
Dawn
You can be a member of BOTH Team Neuro AND Team Spinal!
Kate=Champion! Inspirational!
Kate, Welcome and thanks for the inspiration!
It’s nice to hear from so may fellow Cincinnatians. Keep up the good work all.

Sweet - I think, team Nero is falling apart though…Tibbs flew the coop and the others fell off the face of the earth…
