Inside Knee Pain -- Any thoughts?

I have been experiencing fairly severe pain on the inside of my left knee at what feels to be the tendon attachment point. I went to an ortho who diagnosed it as tendonitis and gave me some anti-inflammatories. The problem is, even after I stopped running for a few weeks, stretched, iced and took the meds, it still hurts like hell. I dont’ think it’s my running shoes since I have had my foot/stride analyzed and spoke with Asics about which shoe is right for me. I also use custom footbeds.

It hurts to walk and particulalry when I stand up after sitting. Going up stairs causes pain and weakness, but oddly enough, running on it does not hurt as bad as walking. This is not similar to IB pain on the outside of the knee. Does anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions?

first thought, it could be a strain of your vaseus medialus oblique there, but then again I don’t know you or see you in person so go see a sport med doc, it really could be alot of different things there

Are you cycling now or have you just been running?

I have been a cyclist for many years, but have not been putting in many miles since November (CT weather). Correspondingly, I have been running quite a bit more since that time.

I am just getting over this tendinitis. It has taken me several months to get it to heal up. Resting it wasn’t helping any the pain was constant. I started to lift with my legs some but that helped a little bit. I started to jump rope again and that seemed to do the trick. The doctor told me my hamstring was pulling on my calf muscle. There was still a little bit of pain at first but now it is all gone. The anti-imflammatories cleared the pain up within two weeks. One stretch I found helpful was to sit on the ground and my legs in front of me. Point your toes forward and try to touch them. This will stretch the upper calf muscle. You can do it one leg at a time or two. If you don’t treat this right away you may begin to favor that leg a little and cause another injury. I waited awhile to seek treatment and developed a limp. It is gone now but was just a secondary nuisance.

I asked this because it sounds like a problem I had a few weeks ago that was finally solved with new cleats for my bike shoes. I have speedplay pedals and the horseshoe spring inside was really worn out (a big groove in it) and the base plate had a lot of wear. Both shoes, when mounted on the pedals, could pitch left and right a few mm’s and that messed up the mechanics of my knee. Something you can look into.

You made me just go check mine… thanks for the insight

Well I would think that if it hurts when you walk you shouldn’t be running on it.

I have had similar pains in my right knee. I sometimes also get a clicking sensation in that tendon-like area behind and inside of the knee. I tend to run a lot of hill/mountains. I can often alleviate by running flats in the morning and running the hills in the afternoons or just alternate between hills and flats. I generally use anti-infl. when it flares up as well. I would have to agree that it’s prob a result of the hams pulling on the calf. I’m by no means educated to make that prediction but seems logical. Rest it if you can. But if you’re like me it’s hard, I know.

This is often from the powerful hamstrings/gastro-soleus “overpowering” the quads (during running). Strengthening the quads, especially the Vastus medialis will help (doing the leg extension machine at the gym)
