I was thinking about this yesterday while on a ride, and it seemed to make sense, except for 1 thing. They would soak up water from t1. Anyone doing this, thoughts?

Bought an arch support type insert at a local running shoe store. I forgot the name of it, but its pretty basic with a graphite arch support. I went for the “cloth” feel type rather than those rubbery ones since I ride w/o socks. So far so good. I haven’t gotten them wet yet but we’ll see what happns at the next race.
I may cut a hole near the front to help drainage. using shimano TR1 shoes.
I won’t ride without inserts (well Sidi’s might not need anything) and love my Superfeet grey platforms. The grey is the cycling specific Superfeet model and is a little lower profile and narrower in the heel than other Superfeet models. Doesn’t absorb any water and gives great support. You could also try other superfeet models or maybe PFI Footsoldiers, Sole regular cushion model or anything else low profile.
I have a moderately bad case of plantar fasciitis. I use Formthothics in my running shoes, and a night splint. I just bought a pair of Carnac TRS7’s. and I gotta say that the inserts are as good as my Formthotics.
If you run in orthotics, then you’re likely to experience difficulty cycling without them. It may be minor, and it may take a while to show up. You will also not have optimum power transfer if your feet don’t sit properly in your shoes.
I sprinkle talcum powder in my shoes, and step on my towel in T-1. Occasionally you pick up some grit running out of transition, but then you can wipe it off before stepping in. You’ll save enough time that it will still be faster.
