Inner Chainring on your Compact Cranks

What are you using on the inner position of your compact crankset? If you are considering a compact crankset, what would you like to have on the inside?

Please opt for one of the following:

33t?

34t?

36t?

38t?

Thank you for your input!

36T. sometimes 34T if it’s really hilly.

Mine came with a 34. It’s OK, although sometimes I think a 36 might be better…at least until the next big hill.

34 because that’s what came on my Ritchey WCS set.

But the compacts are going into the spare parts bin when I move back to Charleston, SC in Nov…

33? I didn’t know a 33 was available.

I have a 34 but would have liked a 36. Congratulations Dave. Waiting on my new Felt SS still.

34, but I also run an 11-21 on the rear. I think most compact sets are stocked with 11-23.

Yes, tough to find but not impossible.

I went with a 34. Glad I did.

Originally a 34. Now a 36 Q ring.

I use a 34 on my compacts, along with a 12-27 for the gap routes in VT. For flat(er) roads i.e. <18% grade, I stick with std 53/39 & 12-25. Goal for compact was to get as close to 1:1 for roads with sustained 20% grades, like Lincoln Gap. I view the compact as a better shifting option to a triple, and the inner ring solely for climbing steep grades, but if I was using it on flatish roads, I would probably never use the 34 inner ring at all. I would guess that the majority of the market would be best served with a 50/34, by simultaneously dropping a ring up front and a two teeth (1-2 cogs) in the back its a pretty smooth transition.

34T with an 11-23.

I second the 50/34 - 11/23 set up.

I run a 50/34 with either a 12-23 or a 12-27 depending on how hilly things are.

Mostly run a 50/34 and an 11-26… but on stuff with long grades 48/38 & 11-32. It gives me a bit more “between” ranges for changing up cadence.

I have a 34t small chainring on my compact cranks.

Presently I have a 34, with an 11-23 10spd rear.

I’m moving to a 36 and a 12-25.
