Injury question: multiple choice

Say you are in a good amount of pain from an IT band injury and are less than 1 month away from IM. You tell your coach that your IT band really hurts from weekend training and it hurts to walk, go up/down stairs etc. Their response is to fight through it for this week which includes 2:30 run and 6:00 bike and that once this week is over we will do a big time taper before the race. Assuming that you are icing, stretching, ART and using TriggerPoint roller and ball do you:

A) Go with coaches advise and fight through the pain as much as you can knowing workouts will not be ideal

B) Have coach revise plan to do less running and biking (which will still hurt)

C) Do your own plan with what will not hurt which will probably be swimming/yoga and start early taper for the race

D) Other

I would rather go into a race 10 % under trained than 10 % injured. I would never do a 2:30 run with an injury like that.

F) Tell your coach “FUCK OFF, can’t you see I’m INJURED!?!?!?”
.

I wouldn’t do any long runs, IF any, for a couple of days. Possibly some easy spinning, but not if it hurts your IT band. If I were you I would tell the coach, that I’d like to take the injury seriously, so I can finish the IM. IT band injuries are usually a pain to deal with, but eventually will go away. You should be fine with a couple of weeks of easy swimming/stretching. OTOH, if you were to push through it you will likely (a) be fine, (b) watch from the sidelines, or (c) compete and make a small overuse injury into an orthapedic nightmare. Is it really worth that 1/3 chance that you’d be fine?

Have you seen a physical therapist, ortho, or athletic trainer?

Paulo, I really am thinking about taking your advise, maybe mildly toned down.
Yes, I have seen a PT and got a codizone shot about 1 week ago with little affect and dtermined the cause is probably from the hips which I will focus on strengthening and am stretching. thanks

Does the IT band hurt when you bike?

Or just when you run or walk?

It does hurt when I run and bike. I actually think it started from biking. About 1 week after it started really hurting I got my bike refit so I think this will help but have not given it enough time to fully recover to really know if bike refitting worked…

The coach of the team I used to be on was like that, I basically told him to fuck off.

FWIW, that a-hole actually thought it was funny when people got injured doing what he said.
