So 1 year ago August I suffered what was diagnosed as a stress fracture in my tibia. Made sense at the time…ramped up way too quickly to prepare for a race I shouldn’t have been running in. Ended up on crutches. Could not put any weight on foot for 3 weeks limped for a few more months. Tried to run again in Dec of that year but figured out after a couple days that I wasn’t ready. Tried to run again late April after about 4 days felt I wasn’t ready yet…(tibia pain) …now just before the new year started trying to run again…No pain yet but a few strides I have thought “what the hell was that” had x ray mri and bone scan. Bone scan showed something but x ray and Mri were inconclusive. Saw an ortho in august and he said I needed time to heal. Only time I have an issue is running otherwise no pain at all. He told me to come back in 4 months. I said " if i dont run on it it wont hurt." to that he said “start running a week before you come back” which to me seemed odd. This was right at a full year, with the exception of a handful of days, no running. Now it has been 16 plus months of no running. I have never had an injury like this. starting to think it is all in my head. My original training that caused the injury was too much too soon but not over the top. No real pain until I was in the race then it was excruciating and ended up on crutches. MRI and x ray showed nothing which I realize happens with stress fractures. It seems to me that with the severity of it (crutches) it would have shown up on the MRI. Has anyone had any experience similar? Wondering if I will have some discomfort and just need to run through it ? Or am I just a wuss?
Already back to page 2 and nothing

I AM NOT A DOCTOR
It is normal to have a little bit of discomfort returning to running in the area that was fractured.
The x ray at this point should show a ‘callous’ over the spot where you had the fracture.
I don’t know anything about MRIs.
Good luck… at this point it seems like maybe you should try some easy running on a soft surface. Make sure you have reasonably new shoes.
If it was a tibial stress fracture 16 months ago it should be well healed . Usually these are due to posterior tibial tendinitis progressing to periostitis progressing to stress fracture. Now we lump all into “medial column stress syndrome”. Certainly ramping up your mileage too quickly could have led to this but is also usually some bio mechanical issues that need to be addressed. I would try to find a sports oriented podiatrist to see and be evaluated as your initial injury should be long gone.
