Any experience with recovery from surgery…days, weeks? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.
I had an inguinal hernia repaired about 6 years ago. Had the surgery in the morning and was walking out (with a lot of help) by the afternoon. The first four days were spend in bed, on Vicodin, pretty much sleeping and relaxing. Seems like I was back to work in about a week if I remember correctly. Not sure how long until I could work out again. Hope this helps and good luck.

I’ve had four on the same side. Two lap and two open. The shortest recovery time for me was six weeks but I had a job requiring me to lift patients(nurse). I know several people who were up and about in one week. Everyone is different, depending on the type of surgery and the type of activity you expect to do. Back then I was into weight training and surfing so my down time was more. I’m not sure if I would of been able to swim, bike, run sooner.
Maybe one of the doc’s could give you more info.
Anyway, good luck.
Just had one repaired last week (direct and indirect, both on left side) - I was in bed for four days and back to work in a week (but was still pretty sore) - I posted a full report on the surgery and recovery process:

Have been walking two or three miles a day for the last couple of days - will get on the stationary bike next week then start swimming after that. Will try running at the 3-4 week mark. My surgeon said not to do anything for the first two weeks then after that I could do any of the three disciplines (NO WEIGHTS FOR 5-6 WEEKS) - she said if it hurts then wait a few more days.
Sneezing or coughing hurts like hell.
Sneezing or coughing hurts like hell.
I forgot about that…yes it hurts like hell! On my first surgery I became constipated from the pain meds…the worst!!!
Thanks for all the info. Was hoping to be biking by 2 weeks. I just had a screw put in 5th metatarsal 6 weeks ago, so still not running anyways. When it rains, it pours.
Biking after two weeks sounds like a fairly reasonable goal but you might want to think about staying on the trainer for a week or two - I don’t think it’s the biking motion that can be a problem, the issue would be falling or having to suddenly pull out of your pedals (abs will be very sensitive after the surgery).
Had it done by laporoscopic surgery. It was truly amazing so am happy to be living in this modern age!
Was back doing a physical job a week later but took it easy for a few weeks. Watch the swelling though as I had to reach into the cupboard for a good dose of N-Saids(anti-inflammatories). Swelling in this area won’t be good for you and if you are unsure go back to the doctor/surgeon as it could be infection etc…

You might want try the trainer first. One thing, after your surgery you NEED TO GET UP AND WALK! You will be sore but the sooner you move the quicker your recovery. Enough with the nurse thing:)
Good luck!
I had an inguinal hernia repair last year and was back swimming and riding after 2 weeks (on the trainer, sitting up riding on the hoods for a couple of weeks). The surgeon (who is also a triathlete) checked me out after 2 weeks and told me I could run, but that the tissue around the repair would swell each time. If I waited another 2 weeks (or one month post-surgery), the swelling issue would be minimized. Since I was tired of carrying an ice pack with me all the time, I waited the extra 2 weeks. I walked every day and it didn’t take long to get back to my previous level of running.
