Inflating a HED3 or Disc wheel tyre?

I finally got my HED3 and HED disc wheel last week, and they ride like a dream.

One problem i have with them though is inflating the tyres. I got the ‘crackpipe’ to get a pump on the valve, but as you can ‘clamp’ it on the valve like you can with a normal pump nozzle, it’s almost impossible to get some decent pressure in to the tyre as the crackpipe doesn’t stay put on the valve.

Anybody have some ideas on how to (easily) inflate tyres on a HED3 or disc wheel??

I usually request the assistance of my SO in inflating my disc. One person holds the crack pipe on the valve, the other pumps.

are your valve extenders long enough? if not, besides changing them, you can also get one of the screw-on valve extenders to put on top to get more length so the pipe attaches properly.

Well i guess thats it, i need a SO NOW!

Are there any (female) volunteers who want to become my SO ?

Hed recommends using tubes with normal (short) stems, without extenders. The way that works best for me is to have the help of someone else, or use one hand to hold the crack pipe on the stem (with the wheel positioned so the stem is near the top) while pumping up the tire with the other hand. I’ve been using the latter for a couple of weeks and it has worked fine. It’s just a little awkward.

The valves seem to be long enough, the crackpipe attaches properly, but when putting in more than 5 bar of pressure it ‘shoots’ of the valve if i don’t hold it securly… and i need two hands to get some decent pressure into the tyres with my pump

I use a small household sponge, cut to size and rolled up. Put the pumphead on the valve then jam the sponge in the wheel to hold in place. Be careful that the pump head is held straight so the valve stem doesn’t bend.

sponge is a good idea, I never thought of that. you can also usually gain some by just screwing down the top of the extender - it scrunches the rubber gasket in tighter so that it will hold on better. It will probably blow off at 120 or 130 without a second hand. If you practice and are heavy enough you can pump one handed like I do. 130 is enough for me. -Andy
