Infinit - How long can it sit in the sun?

I’m doing IMC in less than two weeks. I am using Infinit and trying to decide whether I can premix and freeze my bottles/flasks to pick up at special needs on the bike and at the start of the run, or whether the heat might take it’s toll and I should mix the powder and water during the race for both.

I know some other products can go bad if they sit too long, how long does premixed Infinit stand up in warm conditions?

Thanks - Martin

Here is my take on deciding whether to use a particular product in a race:

  • mix up the bottle at 8am
  • sit it out in the backyard in the sun
  • go get it at 4pm and drink some
  • if it doesn’t make you gag, you’re good to go

My other strategy is to have as few moving parts as possible. Mixing during the race is a lot of parts for me.

I mix the bottles the night before, don’t worry about freezing. (wait, maybe I did sit them in the full ice bucket) And carried both on the bike. (don’t bother with special needs) Never had a problem

But I mix my infinit powder with very little flavour as whatever the taste I get tired of it by the end of the day.

I do this for training as well and all my training is done in the hot south.

I had a concentrated bottle of Infinit in my bike special needs at LP. It sat there from 5:30 am to almost noon and it was fine. I have no protein in my mix, though, so I’m not sure if that would make a difference.

I mixed up a bottle the afternoon before Vineman and it sat in a cooler with ice overnight, then in my special needs. No problem.

Cathy,

Did you use a standard bottle or one of those insulated bottles? I’m thinking about mixing and freezing before Moo.

I use ~3X concentrated Infinit on my long rides. I have often not finished a bottle on Saturday (after being with me 4-6 hours on a sunny ride) and stuck it in the fridge and used it on Sunday. I have protein in mine. FWIW,
Dan

Not Cathy - but I have put infinit in the freezer in the insulated bottle overnight and it never froze. (I have small amount of protein.) So I quit worrying about freezing them. Not sure if that is because of the insulated bottle, the protein… Since I am not able to freeze before a race, I quit worrying about it.

so do you just put it in a standard bottle and freeze or just realize that by the time you get to special needs it will be warm so you just deal with it?

I gave up any notion of cold drinks in the bottles. I carry two bottles mixed to 1000 calories each on the bike. Don’t bother with special needs. What if I can’t find the bag, the bottle leaks… I get cold water from the aid station and usually take a sip of that after the calorie drink.

2 waterbottles in special needs bag from 600am until 1030ish

no problems and I too have given up on trying to keep them cold
.

Just a regular water bottle. It wasn’t frozen, but still cold.
