Indoors storage of bike parts

Does anyone have any good ideas for storage of bike parts? I’m currently using bins on a book shelf and my fiancee wants me to clean up and organize my stuff. I’m thinking chest of drawers, particularly if I can find one of those kinds with the small drawers. What do you think?

Get another frame to hang them on. (pink)

Perhaps you need a new finance.

She just dropped $6k on a bike for me. I think I’m doing better than most.

what kind of “stuff” are we talking about?

I vote for glass cased shelves. Put that jewelry on display!

I’ve got more shit in these drawers than you would believe:

I live in a tiny apartment but I have one of these suckers in one of my closets. It’s filled with bike tools and bike parts. It’s awesome.

Yeah I’m thinking something along these lines. I have tools and small parts everywhere in a 1 BR condo, with most stuff consolidated in bins on book shelves.

Wish I had the space shown in the photo of a garage!!

How important is it to hang wheels? I never do that. I just throw 'em behind a door or something along those lines–always resting then on the floor.

Grosso,

Where did you buy the system to hang your spare wheels and helmets?

Who do I have to sleep with to get something like that?

I like this quote. I pretty much feel the same way about my house. On the next cycling edition of Hoarders…

Wheel arms are Zipp retail slatwall arms. You should be able to order them at your dealer.
I’ve seen the same concept branded by Easton, Mavic, and others.

The slatwall is a 4’ piece by DiamondLife. Only place I could find that sells a smaller piece, instead of a full slab. I got the helmet holders from them too, but you should be able to find those at any retail display supply shop.

I just needed to get everything off the floor, as it’s a 2nd bedroom, not a garage.

I use j hooks in the unfinished ceiling joists in my basement to hang my bikes, big peg board on the unfinished by framed walls to hang tools/helmets and got a couple of pegboard bins to hold cleaners etc. Bought a couple of left over ikea cpu computer drawer units on wheels and put an unfinished, cheap piece of plywood on top for a portable workspace. Also a couple cheap plastic carts on wheels with shelves to hold cleaning supplies, spare parts etc. Everything moves, is light and cheap. Good luck!

If you don’t mind we asking how much was the slatwall piece and the wheel forks?

How big were the larger sections of slatwall?

I will have to check in with my LBS and see if they can help me at all.

I was looking at a company similar but theres look to be fixed where yours looks like you can slide the fork arms into infinite locations.

The brand I am looking at is called WheelzRack.

Have you seen what Wheelzrack charges? Absurd…

So the Zipp arms were something like $30/ea, I don’t recall exactly. If you’re the least bit handy with a welder, you can do it yourself pretty simply. It’s nothing more than a thin sheet of aluminum bent for the slatwall, with a 3/4" pipe welded at 90º. The pipe has a few cutouts drilled at the end for the quick release. I live in an apartment though, so welding is an impossible luxury at this point.

As I said before, I’ve seen many variations of the wheel arms, but mostly in shops as retail displays. They seem to be impossible to find for purchase. Zipps are the only I could find to actually buy. I’ve seen the same idea branded as Mavic & Easton.

These are the only other ones I could find online:

http://shopuptowncycles.com/dual-wheel-slatwall-display.html

The slatwall is a Diamond Life Slatwall MX strip, 6" x 48". You can also buy the strips in 96". The black one I got was something like $30 + shipping.
I chose the strip b/c I don’t have a table saw to cut down a sheet of slatwall. It usually comes like plywood, in 4x8’ sheets. And the DiamondLife strip was appealing to me (versus Gladiator, Husky, etc) b/c it’s MDF with metal reinforced slats. Others are either resin or pure MDF, which has a tendency to snap under load. Hanging that much $$ in wheels, it was worth a few extra bucks.

The helmet hangers came from DL as well, they were like $3. They are made as retail hat displays.

The workbench I built myself.

Awesome!!

I agree I really like the Wheelzrack stuff but that is a lot to just hang some wheels.

I like your system a lot more and I think it will actually be easier to use.

I would like to do as you have with the wheel arms but I envision being able to display maybe 4 or 5 sets of spare wheels, mostly 700c wheels. I would also like to get one an arm accessory so I can hang up spare tires and tubes that I am not using.

I really like the helmet holder but would need to figure out a way to make that work in my house as the other stuff would be in my garage.

I am going to have to see how to get my hands on a few sets of those Zipp arms. Just out of curiosity those arms are for 1 arm? So $60 for 2 to display 1 wheel? Also do they have two cutouts similar to the Wheelzrack product so you can offset wheels on one arm?

Like I said I don’t recall exactly, but they were in the area of $30/ea. Zipp part # is 60.1900.035.000

Each arm holds 2 wheels. So figure on $15/wheel.

Also, if you get this exact setup, the arms take a bit of modification. They are designed for 4" OC slatwall, but the DiamondLife is 3".

So you either need a different arm, a different OC wall, or you have to cut off the bottom lip of the plate of the arm.

OC is the distance from center slat to center slat. So the bottom lip on the Zipp arm doesn’t fit. I don’t think it’s load bearing anyhow, so no big deal.

So i got a hold of Zipp and they said there is the fixed version like yours and then an adjustable swinging one as well.

They quoted me a price of 45-50 per bracket I think. I sent an email to clarify what I am getting for that price but that is much higher than you got yours for.

I may have to keep looking for cheaper options or think about building my own.

I would love to get 4 sets of wheels mounted.
