Anyway. Someone on this forum recommended “City of God” as an excellent trainer movie after I posted questions about racing in Rio de Janeiro. I watched “City of God” last night on the trainer.
For whoever recommended it on this forum, Thank you very much. It really is a gem.
The photography is beautiful- absolutley beautiful. Superb. The characters swing wildy between endearing and abhorent. Incredible writing and great acting- very, very good. The story itself weaves and turns and twists like a Quentin Tarantino plot with similar little sub-stories.
Awesome. The best part- the story is true. Another thing I loved about this movie, and the roiginal person on this forum who recommended it told me this (they were absolutely right): It is a look into a world so foreign and removed from ours.
The 2 hours and 10 minutes spent on the trainer watching it went by in what felt like 15 minutes. This is the kind of story film is made for. Really superb. Highly recommended.

I am sure that is a sweet flick…but my current favorite is Faster the Movie, it is a documentary on the Moto GP circuit…215mph on 2 wheels…those guys are nuts.
I believe that would have been me. I was lent it by my Portuguese teacher who is from Rio prior to going out to Brazil for the IM and 4 days in Rio after the race! I guess she figured I was subborn enough not to be put off!

“Dear America: Letters home from Vietnam” — a stunning documentary from the perspective of the truly fcked-over 19-year old US soldier in Vietnam. I consider this one of the best films I have ever seen in my life, in ANY genre. Gets no arguments from ex-soldiers because every single frame of film is real and 99% of the words spoken are actually written and said by the men and women who were there on the ground. Their wisdom cuts through all the bullsht fed us about this ‘conflict’. Here is a glimpse of real people living, killing, and dying on the battlefield.
A great testament to the intelligence of US, or any country’s, war policy.
Also agree. I think the reality of the characters is what did it for me. They don’t feel like caricatures or made up-and their believability is what sucks you in to the story even further. And the subtitles are nice, for those (like me) that have a bit of a noisier trainer.
That is incredible. There is no tracking capability on USPS shipments like that one. I am amazed it hasn;t arrived yet. When you recieve it you;ll see it was shipped that day after the post on this forum.
Agree- City of God was a great flick. One of those movies that gets you so absorbed that you have no comprehension of time passing.
I love “Faster”. Being a motorcyle racing junkie, I can’t get enough of it. The interviews surrounding the whole Biaggi/Rossi rivalry got to be a bit longwinded, but the profile of John Hopkins is really interesting. Overall, another great flick.
Tom, I know what date you posted it, no problem there. The reason I raised the subject is that my gf had some post she sent me the same week returned to her stating address incorrect even it was correct! Ellen MacArthur documentary on BBC now, check details in a couple of weeks if you get BBC world on cable.

Brazilian, esp. poor folks Brazilian is way different Portuguese than I am used to (learned in Africa, and can understand people from Portugal pretty well)
Cidade de Deus is pronounced: “Ceechaj je Jayoosh” But I guess that’s the maneira most people who speak that lingua falar.
