Indoor storage, wheel or frame

I am considering organizing my bikes in my apartment on a rack instead of leaning wherever there is room. After seeing the IT article about tri garages what is the consensus about hanging bikes from the ceiling or wall by their front wheel? Not too long ago I think there was bad press that it wasn’t good for the wheels (one of my bikes has zipp 404s) and was like racing in a speedo and having forest like leg hair.

I have had mine hung by the front wheels in my basement for at least 10 years, have had no issues. If the wheels can’t handle the 20lbs that the bikes weight, how are they going to handle going at speed with a rider on them.

The Zipp’s had better be able to handle it - if they can’t, then there is no way they will hold you. Now wheels with farings rather than structural carbon are a different issue. There is no way in hell I would hang a bike on some Hed Jet’s.

A little OT but that article was strange to me. I was suprised that people keep that kind of hardware in their garage. I guess if you live in a gated community maybe but seems too inviting to have multipe bikes and wheelsets hanging in full view. I have to come up with a place to store mine too since I use the lean method too.

My garage looks like a slaughterhouse with all the hooks hanging from the ceiling. I hang 5 bikes from their wheels. I choose to hang mine from the rear wheels since the front forks would be a bit stressed if they were hanging there all the time. Also, If I accidently hang it up a bit hard, it’s no big deal. I never hang them on their race wheels, those I keep in a hard case on the floor, cabled to the nearest large metal object. I also run a cable through all the frames and wheels while hanging.

Cheers, Karma

I’d be very cautious about putting hooks into the wall or ceiling of an apartment. Think damage deposit. Also, most of those buildings are going to be metal stud, not wood, so it’s not a matter of finding the stud and screwing in a hook. Go with a rack. I got the “Off the Wall” rack from Performance, but the arms that came with the rack held the bikes too far away from the wall. Solution? I screwed in fork mounts and hold the bikes onto the rack that way (along with a shelf underneath them). Not the most elegant, but it ended up being a much more space-efficient system for me.

In truth, the bike doesn’t need to be any more than 10" away from the wall. So if you could get or make a rack that allowed a hook at about that distance from the wall, you’d be good to go.

Homemade is the only way to go…this whole set up cost me $25. 3 2x4s, 4 hooks, and some misc scraps from home. Need to make some shelves for my shoes next. I got sick of keeping my stuff in the garage and getting it all dusty. Cool wallpaper in the closet huh…the whole room was like that when we moved in. Gotta love rentals!

Your seat is too high…

bcreager,

And too far forward…

Your aerobars need to be shortened a bit…

Where are your S-bends?

Since I don’t see any lower supports, I assume this is bolted to the wall. Correct?

And those flats on the far right in the lower picture… Which are those?

Yep…two 3" screws, right into a stud in the wall, I’ve found anything more then that is just over kill.

The blue and white shoes are Pearl Izumi Floats. They are my race shoes, eventhough they don’t classify them as flats. My feet sweat alot, so when I run without socks, I need something that breaths alot, these do! Plus, they fit my foot great…I normally wear a wide shoe, but didn’t need it with this on. I picked them up at REI, only place I could find that carried them

I tried mounting s-bends, but they just didn’t fit right on my mtb!
