Indoor Cycling trainer..newbie

is there a good cycle trainer that has the ability to simulate routes? and is there ability to compete against other cyclist?
Any recommendations?
… Long winter coming here in Minnesnowta!

Kurt Kinetic Rock and Roll turbo + Sufferfest
.

Computrainer, kickr, trackx & a few others (I think) can do that, byt they are rather expensive (think $1000ish)
As mentioned, using a good fluid trainer (kinetic is excellent) and following some good workout videos like the sufferfest worked very well for me last winter. I hear trainerroad is great too, but havnt tried it yet.

If you would want to go the route of a computrainer, see if there are classes near you - often LBSs will have classes in the winter - its a good way to try them out &/or get in a pretty solid workout in a group rather than alone

This one look promising for group ride and good graphics, but is not released yet:

Cycleops Powerbeam Pro with kinomap is pretty awesome.

Tour de Giro can simulate any route (just upload a GPX file) and has online racing. It supports most popular trainers via ANT+ speed/cadence sensors or can just read your power directly from an ANT+ powermeter or CompuTrainer. We’re up and running now (and have been around for 2 years), and you can do a 2-week free trial that doesn’t start until you’ve had a successful ride online.

What you need for basics (which will probably work for Zwift as well)

Option 1: Speed/Cadence
-Bike
-Any popular trainer (I recommend a new or used Kurt Kinetic Road Machine)
-ANT+ Speed/Cadence sensor. This should work: http://www.amazon.com/...t%2B+speed%2Fcadence
-ANT+ USB stick
-Mac or PC

Option 2: Powermeter
-Bike
-Any trainer at all
-ANT+ powermeter like a PowerTap, Kickr, Quarq, Stages
-ANT+ USB Stick
-Mac or PC

Option 3: CompuTrainer
-Bike
-CompuTrainer
-Mac or PC

Any of these options will let you ride with Tour de Giro, Zwift, Trainerroad (structured training), or other widely-targeted training apps.

We currently support ability to race against your own past performances with the Internet racing coming in a next 30 days

As for road simulation you need trainer with computer controlled resistance like Computrainer/KICKR/Lynx. We support those. We also support whole bunch of simple turbo trainers but their resistance does not change along with road grade. You could kinda simulate it by changing gears but of course it is far cry comparatively to the higher end trainers

Just got a Wahoo Kickr - using Trainerroad - but Kinomap looks very cool. Problem is only have IOS app. Site says App on Google Play - windows OS - is “comming soon”. Emailed a Q to site - but no response. Anybody have the info re: when there Trainer app will be available on windows OS platform?
