Indoor 5K AR last night

What? no talk of Rupp’s indoor 5k AR at BU last night in 13:01. Chelanga also under the previous record in 13:04 I think. Cam Levins in 13:19 for 3rd (maybe Canadian record?). 4th place ran 14:14. Could you imagine running 14:14 and getting lapped twice! Oregon Track Project is off to a fast start and have a few more races planned at BU upcoming. There are a lot of opinions/criticisms regarding Rupp but you have to respect 13:01 indoors.

It is pretty great. Too bad you gotta pay to watch the video.

Poor quality video, but it is free.

It is a great time, but considering Rupp’s “allergies” and how fast the BU track is, it is not quite amazing as it sounds. I would argue it is not any better a performance than his outdoor PR. Also, considering how quiet Chelanga has been the past few years, I would say his 13:04 is more eye opening.

However, the fact that he has this fitness in January is impressive, so probably better performances to come.

Wikipedia says its a Cdn record as well.

I would argue 13:01.2 indoors is a little better than 12:58.9 outdoors even if at BU, especially given he followed a kenyan/ethopian train at prefontaine until 4000 or 4200 and then followed farah the rest of way. Really feels like I’d be splitting hairs arguing for either one I guess.13:01 is 13:01, 7th fastest all time indoors. Chelenga did look good. He ran 4:05/6 or so last week at Dartmouth relays in the mile so kind of surprised to see 13:04

Was he wearing Hokas and a fuel belt? Or just concentrating on running fast?

Don’t let slowman catch you putting down Hokas… He’ll go off!

4:11/ mile pace. I’d be pressed to hold 400M at that pace.

I bet he was pissed he didn’t break 13. But I bet he can’t go <10 in a IM, so he sucks by ST standards. Clearly a Fast Twitch kind of guy.

too late!

You don’t even need to argue it. The BU track is nice but there’s nothing magical about it. You put Rupp on the Reggie track across town (where more than a few world records have been set) with that effort and you’d get the same time. There’s plenty of indoor tracks just as “fast”

I have to assume what you are saying is that it is not as amazing as it sounds because Rupp should capable of that, rather than saying 13:01 is not incredibly noteworthy - seventh or eight all time indoors.

“Those damn kids don’t know how to run the boards!”

This question of what might come from Rupp is interesting. He does not seem to have the killer instinct (or raw talent) of Farah, or Bekele. But he seems more consistent or maybe more relentless. He is not far off a WR or a gold medal now.
