Indianapolis and Nashville running

I am off again to a couple of U.S. cities with which I am not familiar. I would like to run when there (on business), so I turn to the forum for advice:

  1. Indianapolis
I am staying downtown (near the Capitol). The hotel’s running route is, at best, 5 miles. Any suggestions for longer, scenic routes?

  2. Nashville, TN
I will stay downtown (on Union Street). Any suggestions?

Thanks

For Indy, this is your best bet. The Monon is a pretty nice trail and you should be fairly close to it. There are also a lot of other trails. Just stick to the north and north-east side of town and don’t be on the trails after dusk. There have been a few muggings after dark. If you have a car, there are some really nice roads to run in the Carmel area (20 min north on US 31/Meridian street). Little Eagle Creek Ave (and a bunch of roads in that area) is a beautiful, rural road to run along. It’s one of my favorite riding routes.

Nashville, check out Percy warner park. Theres trails to run on and lots of roadies do loops out on Belle Meade Blvd which is at one of the entrances to the park.

Google Nashville striders and post on message board-General forum -you can probably hook up with a group run if you want.

If you are coming to Nashville in the next week to 10 days, your best bet is a treadmill. It’s nasty hot here right now. google nashville ymca and go to the downtown Y and pay the one day fee. It will be within a 5 minute walk of your hotel. If you are coming after this heat wave hopefully subsides, your best 2 options without a car are to run west towards Centennial Park or east over the river to Shelby Bottoms. pm me if you want info on precisely how to go either route.

Someone else posted about Percy Warner, and it’s definitely a great place to run, but you will be looking at a 15-25 minute (depending on traffic) drive to get there, so it’s only an option if you have wheels and some time to spare.

Thanks for the info. I found the White River path this morning and had a good out-and-back run. Looks like there are lots of other trails to explore if I’m back here again.

Appreciate the help.

Mr. Mike,

I will be coming this week, but I’ll likely be running at 6am (so hopefully before heat is too unbearable). The Shelby Bottoms option looks interesting. Could you send me some more specific directions? Looks like you can’t follow the river exactly…

Thanks

Shelby is nice but flat as a flitter. Percy Warner is NOT. I live 45 minutes from PW and drive there a few Saturdays a month to run. If you like off road. PW has off road trails that are a blast.

I also have to go to Indy for work. I would run the Monon by parking in BroadRipple and going North up to Carmel. Very scenic route with some good mileage.

If you’re in Indy and stay north of BroadRipple, you won’t have to worry about anyone stealing your new Newtons if it’s dark…

Indy Downtown - There are good routes downtown - go around the zoo, use the canal, run up to the velodrome, access the canal towpath etc.

Indy Butler University - the Canal towpath is a very nice run.

Indy Northwest - Eagle Creek - road and trail routes - very nice

Indy - The Monon is an easy way to get miles. It is best accessed, IMO, from Broad Ripple northward.

Indy East - Fort Ben - trails (I think) and road with hills.
