In the Ithaca, NY area?

I’m swimming at Cornell (Teagle) Monday through Friday
6am MWF and 7:30 T,R

and biking and running in the afternoon (on a trainer!)

I’ve been working with Mike Doane as my coach and it’s going awesome, but it would be cool to train with some others.

I have a consistent swim partner and he’s damn fast (he busted out an 8:59 800y in practice the other day), but I’d like to meet some other folks.

PM me. Thanks!

So has Teagle been renovated, or is it the same 50-60’s era pool? I haven’t been there since spring of '92. Good memories, though. Some great rides around Cayuga.

Good Luck,

Dave Hall

Yes, it’s an older 6 lane pool. But deep all the way across and that’s nice and it’s never too crowded.

The running and cycling is great here, even if I am on a trainer right now.

Thanks!

…resurrecting this old thread.

I am heading to the Ithaca area next week for a 4 day vacation. Does anyone have any tips for:

  1. good local beers/breweries
  2. restaurants
  3. open water swimming (Lake Cayuga - where to start?)
  4. bike rental options?

I’ll be staying in Interlaken. Thanks!

Matt

I was accepted to Cornell. Does that count?

Yay Cornell people ('04 here). And congrats on the acceptance!

You have to try Ithaca Brewing Co beers. They will be all over town, shouldn’t be hard to find. As for restaurants, it’s been a few years, but my favorites are the Heights and Madeline’s for fancier food, Just a Taste for tapas, Taste of Thai for, well, Thai. Simeon’s is a stable for general American. A lot of places are in and around the Commons so that is probably your best bet.

Moosewood, a famous vegetarian place, is just around the corner from the Commons.

I don’t know anything about OWS (although Cayuga Lake shouldn’t be a problem, try Stewart Park at the southern tip or Taughannock Falls park on the west side). As for bike rentals, perhaps call Cayuga Ski & Cyclery (off the Commons) or the Bike Rack (Collegetown).

Have fun, it’s the best time of year up there!

That was in 1988 but thanks for the late congrats.

Haha, okay then… still an accomplishment

Can’t help so much for exercise options, but for beer:

Horseheads Brewing Co. Their Hot Jala Heim beer is one of the best I’ve ever tasted. Call to confirm, but their brewery usually only has it on tap on Wednesdays. It’s about a 30 minute drive from Ithaca.

Restaurants: Agree with Madeline’s and Just a Taste. Moosewood is overrated and overpriced. But if you’re a veggie, then I guess you have to go for a pilgrimage. Elizabeth’s Restaurant at the John Joseph Inn is one of my favorites. Both John and his wife are CIA trained chefs and make wonderful food. A little heavy on the butter/cream sometimes, but, IMO, it’s the best Ithacan restaurant.

Thanks for all the info.

How is Maxie’s Supper Club and Oyster Bar?

Matt

Not bad. But not my first choice if you have limited dining opportunities.

Maxie’s is OK. Lots of greasy fried foods which I’m not a huge fan of. I tend to stay away from any fish product in Ithaca as it’s not really fresh.

If you’re going to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday (9-4), the Cambodian food booth is one of my favorites and would make a good lunch.

from the OP just emailed this to me the other day
Thursday 8/5: 5:45am at 24 Esty Drive, swim from Esty to Yacht Club non stop (1.2 miles) and then back non stop (another 1.2 miles). If you have to leave early, you can cut it short or just get out at the Yacht club and hitch hike. Click Here for Map
Saturday 8/7: 7am at East Shore, carpool up to Esty Drive, swim from Esty to East Shore (1.9 miles) Click Here for Map not sure what dates you will be in town. i am from Horseheads so i don’t get up there much for the brew and food stuff. i saw on the commons right across from the Tri store they had bike rentals. i think they were mountain bikes though.

TwinRacer,

Thanks…I will arrive into the area on Saturday midday, August 7 and depart on Tuesday morning, August 10. Let me know if you guys end up swimming during this time.

I’ll be staying in Interlaken, but I’ll have a car so I’m pretty flexible.
