The internet wins again!
that is funny, before I could see the pics…
anyway, to see goto http://www.tdwsport.com/ > image desk > free access > stage 1 and you can see a nice little sequence of VdV laying it down (and almost doing the fatal collarbone hand reach!)

Ooof nice!

Ooo… that doesn’t look pleasant.
So, what do you mean by the “fatal collarbone hand reach”? Is there a recommended way to take a fall if you are going down?
Don’t land with your arm extended to break your fall. If your hand hits the ground, with your arm out straight, the force will most likely break your collarbone.
This bike wins coolest of the day award

So, are you suppose to take the fall on your shoulder?
Actually, I don’t think you’re supposed to fall at all. ![]()
In all reality, I’d venture to guess it’s probably best to roll your shoulders in and try to land more on your back. But I really don’t know.

That seems about right. Landing on an outstretched hand or an elbow is a disaster waiting to happen.

I’m trying to figure out what I did this weekend; I crashed in a crit Saturday. I went down on my right side and I must’ve gotten my hand off of the bars as I took a chunk off of my palm and ground up my forearm to the elbow. Lots of hip and leg road rash too. The weirdest part is I have no impact soreness or bruising. My foot did come out of the shoe and the frame broke at the seat tube, so maybe that soaked up the impact. Funny how you can remember the events up to the crash but not exactly how you hit the ground.

I ran across this on the Garmin-Slipstream website… It’s the step-by-step guide to crashing in a bike race.

This seems like one of those skills that would be great to have, but I don’t think I want to roll around on the asphalt enough to actually learn.
Yes.
I took Judo long enough to get my yellow belt (first belt).
The first they taught (that I can remember) was how to fall. Never stick out your arm unless you want it broken.
Falling properly was part of every warmup.
I’ve crashed 4 times pretty hard in my cycling career. Nothing but some missing skin and bruises…
I like to think that Judo ingrained in me the ability to fall properly.
Ha! That’s awesome. I wish I’d had time to think about the “Evel Knievel damage control position”.
I was just thinking about the fact that I bought that frameset here on Slowtwitch. It was beautiful…really immaculate. I’m sorry, original owner… ![]()
On the plus side, I borrowed another bike and won the RR the next day, bandages and all.
I took a USCF weekend class about a million years ago. One afternoon they had us “falling” on purpose. We spent and hour or so falling over in a grass field. You don’t let go of the bars and roll onto your back/shoulder blade. Don’t stick out our arm!!
