In case you thought it wasn't about the engine

that is pretty awesome. thx for sharing!

Thanks, I was going to buy a Cervelo, but now I think I’ll buy a Whyte 19!

A few weeks ago I was out training. I was on my P3C riding along at a nice 25 mph pace when this guy on a mountain bike blew past me and yelled, thanks for the pull. WTF!

Even more surprising is that it had 26 inch wheels…old technology these days.

It would be interesting to know who he was racing against. A 75 km distance **road **race is for youths or old AGpers.

not really…USA Cycling Cat 3 races are around that distance, from what I’ve seen
.

I’m racing in RR next week that’s ~75km in a cat 4 field.

Uh, no.

Not quite the same, but a teammate of mine have the best TT time at last weeks Tri (Lums Pond in Delaware) - 26mph on a regular road bike.

Michael

what’s really cool is that picture of him with the cheetah.

“There were a couple of guys whom some friends of mine had told me to watch – one of them is apparently a pro roadie in South Africa. It was no surprise that it was these guys who made most of the attacks. What was surprising was the fact that I was able to go with them! Each time, however, we were pulled back by the main group.

It’s a lovely story, and I’m sure the rider is strong. However it’s purely a publicity piece for his sponsor - And well done to him.

The race is not a serious road race as you might normally expect, you can see the rules here: http://www.gcc.org.bw/bps_chal_rules09.php

Some things which show it’s more of a Sportive, than a race:

"Cyclists are not to cycle more than 2 abreast at any time during the race. "
“Cyclists must keep to the left and overtake on the right.”
"The cut-off time for the 75km race will be 10h30 at the halfway point. All cyclists will be required to get a sticker at the halfway point. If you do not have a sticker and are in line for a prize, you will not receive it! "

What real road race requires two abreast riding, or has everyone stop to get a sticker half way around!

You can see (http://www.gcc.org.bw/gallery.php?gallery=wharic09) of their other races (and I’m sure racing opportunities in Botswana are pretty limited, so everyone does everything) and there’s no Zipp’s on show, there’s very little carbon or deep section anything. It’s not surprisingly the sort of robust bikes handy when you’re at the end of a long supply chain in a poor country.

What’s even more odd, is why an elite MTB in southern africa, doesn’t pop down to a genuine MTB event. (http://www.illovoestonmtb.co.za/) and win that?
