Taylor Knibb 8:35 in her debut IM without specific IM training! That has got the attention of every single female pro
But everyone was saying that she had been training for it since January, had a team of experts behind her and was going to win…
She looked shell shocked at the end.
She had not been. Who the hell said that? Clearly she didn’t. It being in “the plan” since January is not the same as training for it. She had it in the plan with a conditions based race schedule but did not begin any specificity until after she qualified for Paris. If she didn’t qualify for Paris this would have come off the schedule. This was clear from her video on her youtube channel.
My issue is the overall production of the event. The commentaries are okay…I do enjoy when they go to Welchy, Rinny, and they do an interview with someone. However, we need to see the race. Not just the upper right hand corner. We need the camera’s panning to more than just Taylor, LCB, & the occasional other pro that they pan to for a third camera.
Show us the elevation when they make the right turn to Hawi.
We need more overhead shots.
Talk about more athletes.
We didn’t see LCB make the right hand turn to Alii drive. This is where the celebration begins. This is the most famous right hand turn in all of Ironman. Yes we did see Anne make the turn.
We need to see video of what happened to Kat.
We need more split screens. And I don’t mean the upper right hand video where no one can see it.
Where was the video of Laura making a charge of Taylor. Yes we see the pass but as soon as Taylor walked that aid station we needed to see a video on just how close Laura was.
The last several miles we don’t see a lot of LCB. It was mostly Taylor and Anne with us maybe seeing Chelsea.
They briefly talked about Chelsea moving up through the field but for a long time she was on pace to beat Rinny’s record (yes I know Anne got it). She was also on pace to catch Ryf. What happened? Where did Chelsea slow?
This is a production issue that needs to be fixed. The commentators will report on what they see on screen and it will improve. You can have plenty of advertisements but show us how the race is playing out!
As a fan I am watching the event on YouTube via my TV, I have Slowtwitch open on my tablet to see what others think(or know) is happening in the race, and I have my phone open on the Ironman App to give me real time because the TV is off about 20-30 seconds.
Ironman- If you want to grow your sport then you have to show your sport!
To be very clear, all of those things are “director” issues and not “production”. Production issues are technical ones. (Sorry, I have to be that guy). Honestly Triathlon directors this year and maybe all the time are some of the worst in racing. But hey they’re probably still better than us I’m guessing because they’re doing it and we aren’t. I thought this was a lot better than previous, but I agree with a lot of the things you said. Chelsea was never on pace to catch Ryf btw.
My take away from this thread is that many of you complain about fucking everything.
Amazing race coverage all day, but oh no, the announcers make a few mistakes along the away (usually corrected by one another)…and oh, you didn’t like the placement of the Vinfast finish camera…oh no!
Jeez… some people can never be pleased.
We can compare it DIRECTLY to PTO or ITU though!
PTO has better commentators, better on screen graphics, better info on gaps. I never understand why IM just chose random places to do time splits from. Do them at miles or Kms I care not, but do it at whole figures so we can work out paces! I want ACCURATE gaps between athletes. I want maps showing where they are on course relative to each other. I want commentators such as Brownlee or Frodo or Chrissie or basically anyone who won in the last 10 years! I want interviews with coaches to break up the monotony. This is not rocket science. This is just looking at every other “world event” and seeing what they do!
Its also broadcast for free on YouTube because we all know if it goes PPV the audience will fall through the floor!
I understand the need for ads and sponsors. But if AG1 or whoever expect 20 ads in 8 hours. Then they need to supply 5 different ads to rotate through so you don’t get bored of seeing them. Same as that guy going “wow” about his shitily built Vietnamese EV
This is fundamentally untrue. Expecially on the graphics piece. But on the comms? Notice that Moritz Events use many of the same people that Ironman uses. Rinny was at PTO events…hell even Welch was on comms for one. The only person that Ironman didn’t have was Kelly who I don’t want to hear again (but they did a few collabs on social this week).
So you could admit they’re both equally poor, but this is what you’re going to get because that’s Triathlon.
