I am set for winters & spring now and quadrupled my riding options year 'round.
After buying fat 32mm tires for my road bike, I really went crazy and bought this brand new bike today: I got a good deal on an '04 (sort of a touring/cross bike), threw on some cross tires and the bike shop threw in cheap SPDs for free. Figure I’ll use the cross tires & the 32s on this baby this winter and spring & keep my road bike on the trainer 'til April or May.
Took it up some single track near my house today, then rode 30 min. out on the road: Now I fear no gravel, which fills the roads here until June. The best part is the Deore rear derailleur & 32 tooth casette. -TB
There is one Xcross here every year in Oct. or early Nov. Maybe next year.
I mainly bought it for training: The geometry is very similar to my RB. There are gravel roads all over the valley here (and up in the hills) so now my options are much greater and I can avoid more traffic. Yet it still feels like I can road ride semi-fast on this bike (just 2+/- mph slower w/ knobbies … probably just a bit slower than my RB if I put on road tires). -TB
